Bathroom blues

Hate to even talk about it but I'm wondering if after a while, your body adapts to a plant based diet and you don't have to spend quite as much time in the bathroom?

Your body will get used to the added fiber. If you are loading up on beans, make sure you cook them well to aid in the digestion and a little goes a long way, so a 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup of beans gives you protein, fiber and more! Might consider doing a food journal in case you feel the blues for a while and might need to explore if you have an intolerance to something. Keep us posted!

Part of it is also cultural. If we have a movement once a day, that is very time-saving. But consider if you really want to keep that stuff "with" you longer than your body needs it. It is a shift in how you view the process really.

phyllismarie40 I have had the same response as you to the fiber. Honestly, it's 3-4 x's per day. Just wanted you to know someone else is having the same changes.

Normal for me is at least 3 times a day, pretty much after every meal, whether it includes meat or not. But now, it's like 6-8 times a day! It is crazy. But I feel better. Apparently things don't stay in my system for too long which I think is probably good.

I have been vegetarian since 2000, mostly vegan since October, totally vegan since 1/1/2010. 3 times a day is pretty standard for me and has been for quite a while. You'll begin to feel really "cleaned out" after you go and it is a GOOD feeling. Onces your body has extracted the useable nutrients from the food, you want to get it gone!

Ditto to what Jill said. It also helps to soak dry beans in water before cooking. The longer the better, even overnight. That helps make them more digestible if that is a problem. After being vegan for nearly 7 years now, I feel more energetic and more healthy than I felt eating a lacto-vegetarian diet. Having regular movements helps from feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and reduces risk of constipation, diverticulitis, colorectal cancer and other diet-related illnesses. But it is true that just as your mind needs to adjust to the newness of a plant-based diet, your body does too. Once your body does adapt though, you will see vast improvements!

One time I saw Dr. Oz on Oprah (back before he had his own show), and he said that a piece of meat decays in your colon just as slowly as if that meat were sitting out on your kitchen counter. He was more eloquent than that, but you get the point. Now I don't know how scientific or tongue-and-cheek that comment was, but boy did it ever offer up a great mental picture for appreciating regularity. Thanks Dr. Oz!

It was once explained to me thus: think of your mouth as a tunnel into which the train (a meal) travels. For every train that travels into the tunnel...one must come out the other side. Otherwise, you'll be in for a big pile up inside!

The only time I had the 6 times a day thing was when I was drinking a lot of kefir every day. I haven't had that on this diet, so maybe there is a single thing you are having that is the contributor. You can analyze which foods you are eating the most and go without one for a day and see its effects.

I was glad to see that some other folks were having an issue with the bathroom. Well, not glad you were having issues but glad to see that I wasn't the only one! However, I think my issue is a little different. I was used to a quick "evacuation" in the mornings, right after having a cup of coffee. Lately, I've found that I have to spend a bit more time on the john and a lot more effort with evacuation (trying to be as delicate as possible with my imageries ). This has bothered me quite a bit, physically as well as emotionally, so I figured I needed to cut back a bit on my grain servings, try to drink a lot more water, and include more fruit. I think my body just needs to adjust to the more fibrous diet, and I assume I'll be able to add more grains as my body gets used to it.

That's weird, Josie, I was just going to write about the same thing! It doesn't make total sense to me, since I thought I was eating MORE fiber than I used to, with oatmeal every morning and a lot more produce.

Hi rb, Well I'm definitely eating more fiber than I used to, especially since I cut out eggs for breakfast. So I figured perhaps I needed to compensate for the extra bulk in my colon with more water. And I'm also eating smaller portions now that I've started having that problem. Maybe it's just an overload on my colon. I sure hope it gets better soon though!

Well I know that I have always had trouble going to the bathroom. I have constipation. But lately I have been going to the bathroom and have been getting the (poop) out of my system and then done. Before I would have to spend a couple to a few hours on the toilet to get it all out. Also I have less stomach aces then ever before.

Just be happy it's coming out and not sitting in there rotting. Three a day is quite ok and even more depending. Sometimes it's a detox symptom too...your body finally gets some good clean food and takes the opportunity to "flush" ithe gunk all out, pun intended. If you start to get a little sore, use some hemmroid wipes or cream. It will pass.

Okay, I was wondering if this was happening to others as well!!! Since the day I was born (literally) I've been "blocked up". I take fiber pills everyday as prescribed by my doctor, and I eat Raisin Nut Bran with soy milk every morning (and sometimes for a yummy-sweet dinner!!!), and these have been helping me... but since going vegan, I stopped taking the fiber pills, and I've been "going" after every time I eat, and sometimes in between meals!!! This is great for me, as this has been a life long issue. Just knowing I can "go" naturally, makes me feel so much healthier!!!

Well Done You, PirateAshley! I have always had that problem as well (from the day I was born). In fact, didn't realize it was such a big problem until I was older and found out other people weren't like me. I have to say that my body is functioning much, much better now that it's adjusting and I'm eating smaller portions and drinking more water....and oh yeah, no more dairy!!!

Im glad someones with me. Pretty much everything you said except for I never had to take fiber pills. But Im so glad some has the same issue with me. : ) I remember my docter telling me a few years ago to get more fiber. So I went to trader joes with my mom and got these fiber crackers. I can see now though I get more fiber then I have ever had before.
