Is it OK to eat soy or not?

I hear so many mixed messages about soy. What is the true story about miso, edamame, soy milk, cheese, tofu, soy isolates, soy oil, soy protein, etc. I switched from cow's milk to soy milk and now I'm told that's bad. Tofu is the mainstay of the Japanese culture but that is supposedly bad too. How can that be? I find this very confusing.

See the info in these threads from earlier in the week (they have moved off the front page):

But basically, yes soy is fine--like all things--in moderation and has shown to be beneficial in many ways. Choose less processed versions of soy like edamame, tempeh, tofu, soymilk, etc. and avoid highly processed ones (as with anything else). BUT if you don't want to eat soy, that's fine too. It's just one of many many beans to choose from and there are alternative milks and proteins by the dozens.

Hope that helps!
