As far as health is concerned - that is the main reason as far as I know. When I was a teen, my dr. told me to cutback on them because of my cholesterol levels. As far as animals are concerned - I used to buy free range eggs and was planning on building my own coop next spring because of the horrible conditions at factory farms. Then I read an AP news article a few months back about baby boy chicks getting ground up alive. The industry did not deny it in the expose, they called it "instant euthanasia" and claimed it was the most humane way to dispose of them. It seems that the industry stopped raising the males for meat about 50 years ago, in favor of breeds that plump up faster.
