Is the main reason not to eat eggs for the cholesteral? My medical nutritionist said that I have extremely low cholesteral and should eat eggs. Any thoughts?

Well my first question to an nutritionist who said that would be "how many people died this year because of a low cholesterol?"

Assuming they mean the "good" kind, you can increase that with walnuts and adequate exercise.

Any good nutritionist could have given you that information if you shared with them that you are a vegan.

In fact here is a great link:http://heartdisease.about.com/cs/cholesterol/a/raiseHDL.htm

As far as health is concerned - that is the main reason as far as I know. When I was a teen, my dr. told me to cutback on them because of my cholesterol levels.

As far as animals are concerned - I used to buy free range eggs and was planning on building my own coop next spring because of the horrible conditions at factory farms. Then I read an AP news article a few months back about baby boy chicks getting ground up alive. The industry did not deny it in the expose, they called it "instant euthanasia" and claimed it was the most humane way to dispose of them.

It seems that the industry stopped raising the males for meat about 50 years ago, in favor of breeds that plump up faster. I couldn't find the original article, but I did find this:

Eggs are also high in protein and fat, both sources easily obtained with a balanced vegan diet. My main reason for not eating eggs is because of the inhumane living conditions and horrific factory slaughter of the animals, not to mention the antibiotics, steroids, pesticides and hormones in most eggs* that I'd rather not ingest. Even "free range" is often not a label with any real truth to it.

my main reason for not eating eggs is that they are the reproductive secretions of chickens. ha ha ha ha ha.

never heard of cholesterol being too low, but surely you can do something other than eat eggs, which are high in saturated fat. isn't it the ratio of HDL to LDL that's more important than the total number anyway (so long as you're not over the upper limit)?

I buy organic free range eggs, but we don't eat them.
My dogs are vegetarian.
I don't think a vegan dog is a healthy or viable option.
