How do you keep em?
Posted Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 7:59 AM
How do you all keep your recipes so you can find them when you want them? I type my favorites in a word doc, put them in file folders.. then i print out the really good ones on fancy computer paper - all colorful - bright & cheery.. the font nice and big so i can read it. then i stick that paper into a plastic sleeve & put in a 3 ring binder. that way i have a word doc to share when someone asks for a recipe..and my own recipes are handy & stay clean when i cook! also - those recipe books make great gifts.. so how about you??

We hole punch them and put them in a binder once they've been proven out as favorites. Hubby also has a bunch of recipes on his laptop and he sets that up in the kitchen to play music while he's cooking/baking and sets the font BIG and bold so he can just glance over at the recipe easily. His biggest pet peeve in this regard are perfect bound cookbooks because they don't open and lay flat the way spiral bound or ring binders do. --Deb R

You guys are so good and organized! I have a pile of recipes, typed, printed and torn from magazines that is over an inch thick. I need to take a cue from you and get a binder! One thing I did when I first went vegan was to write down every single dish I made and liked (especially things that are too simple to need a recipe)to look at when I ran out of ideas. This has really helped me when I just can't think of anything at all to eat.

This has really helped me when I just can't think of anything at all to eat. We used to have a stack of recipes just like that. Then we stuffed it all into a pocket folder. We still ended up losing recipes (there were a few recipes that hubby had 'invented' that we can no longer find ) About a year or so ago, I got all those recipes together and spent a Saturday typing them all up and printing them out. In the process, I used the sparkpeople recipe calculator to include all the nutritional info for those recipes. I don't do that much anymore (because now we just print the recipes directly from the websites or wherever - even magazines post a lot of that sort of thing online). It also makes things a lot easier for our 12 yr old - if he wants to make something, he knows how to find it instead of hunting through scraps of paper. We did, however, keep the handwritten recipe cards that friends had given us over time even though it's printed out in the binder. There's more to them than just the recipe, there are memories there too.--Deb R

Being disorganized and chronically lazy, I don't write down my recipes - things I have invented for myself. One benefit of that: I keep varying what I create with mostly good results. But not always. Sometimes my invention is the pits; even the cats won't eat it.

Don't feel bad about sometimes the cat won't eat them.... I was with a guy who didn't like squash.. any squash.. One day i cooked it anyway, along with another veggie... We decided to throw out the little bit of leftover squash at the end of the meal... we gave it to the dog.. Later we went out give the dog some attention, we couldn't find his food dish.. he drug is food dish 25-30 ft to the sand pile.. and burried the dish.. squash and all. no more squash for that dog!

His biggest pet peeve in this regard are perfect bound cookbooks because they don't open and lay flat the way spiral bound or ring binders do. I agree with him! I love any cookbook that is either spiral bound or a binder. Trying to keep those other books open is a huge pain.

I keep them all in my computer. Only print them when I plan to use them. If it's something I really like and think I'll use it often I'll stick it in a file folder on the shelf with my cookbooks. I have 3 huge shelves of cookbooks. I've still hung on to a few from my pre-vegetarian days, but mostly they are plant based.

I have so many cookbooks in my pantry, but it's a problem cause hubby keeps telling me to try new recipes. One of my new years resolutions is to try a new recipe each week to shut him up!! I have a huge 3 ring binder that has recipes I've either hand written, printed out or photocopied from magazines. I also have a huge stack to add to it. Another thing for my to-do list.

Cch22, yes I have found some on the kickstart, also. I would love to have hubby involved, but it will have to be at a later date. He works much more than I do and just wants to veg (pun intended) when he gets home. He's working 60 hrs a week at a new director position and I (only) work 40 plus on call. I do ask his opinion so he is sorta involved. Hopefully, not too far off he will be able to slow down before the stress kills him. At least his diet is healthy!!
