How are you finding the program
Posted Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 4:24 PM
I was wondering how you are going? I keep falling off the plank... I guess that is OK, reminds me how addicted I have become to some foods... like coffee.. I am weaning myself off.. had a terrible headache then realised it was coffee related so drinking less and weaker.. I use raw gaots milk in it and trying black..

I have been 100% since at least January 1, that's when I really started counting, actually started before that. I have the advantage of having done the October Kick-Start so knew what to expect. Fell off the wagon a bit over the holidays but back on track for 2010. Have you tried soy milk or almond milk in your coffee? I've been off coffee now for over a year. For some reason I just lost interest in it, found I was re-warming more than I was drinking. Finally just quit making it. Now I have a cup maybe every couple of months. I'm 58 years old, have been healthy all my life, want to stay that way! I tell people I'm rewarding my body for staying healthy through all my youthful indulgences! Every time you fall off the plank, just jump back on. Eventually you'll start feeling so good you'll do everything in your power to stay on the plank. I am vegan for life.

I have been able to stay focused. I weighed myself today and there was 1.6 lb loss. I'm still not sure if I am doing everything right.

fantastic news, I am going to give it a go as I am turning 50 next week and I have been really healthy all my life but have noticed a few changes.. I want to grow old beautifully and with energy.. seems like this may be a big step towards that.. don't like soy but black coffee is ok. maybe it will help me cut back .. don't really need it and have noticed that as I am drinking more water I don't look for so much coffee

It's been easy for me. Should have done it a long time ago. Feel light and energetic. Love to cook too, so all the new recipes are fun

I've been a vegetarian for about 20 yrs now and have recently been feeling guilty for continuing to eat chicken and fish. For me, chicken will be easier to give up than seafood, especially tuna. I've been trying this 21 day kickstart for 7 days now and its not as hard as I thought and I've made a couple of the receipts, (lentil & sweet potatoe), (heartly chilli) both Yum-oooo. I have to cut down on the amount thou, cuz 10 servings for 1 is just too much, thou I have frozen some portions for later use. My question is, is anyone having one long continued dull headache???

I've been printing out some of the recipes that look really good and I also like Dr. Esselsyn's nutrution tips. Very encouraging. I've been doing great this week. I've been leaning into eating this way over the last year. But not perfect. So I'm giving it a serious try. I love this program that they have set up so you don't feel so different. But after listening to my friends talking about cancer & heart disease being so prevelent. I'm sticking with this! I have had a dull headache...but that's because I decided to go decaffeinated, recently...so I've just taken a couple of aspirins everyday.

I've not experienced any headaches. But I'm not a headache person. I've probably had 5 or 6 headaches in 58 years. I know a lot of people experience headaches when they cut down or eliminate coffee. And I've heard of people getting headaches as their body is adjusting to good foods and de-toxing from all the "bad" stuff. Don't let it discourage you.

thanks bluerabbit and wild4stars. i've not been able to give up my morning coffee, thou, I only have one cup but have changed my milk to silk, which to my surprise, is really good. i have another question for you girls, are you following the menu plan to the letter? What i mean is, because i have so much left over from week one, (being the only one on the program) I've been eating the same lunch and sometimes for dinner as well. i've done pretty good with breakfast. Believe it or not, i lost 3 lbs this week without starting my exercise program. WOW, but i will start. don't get me wrong. they go hand in hand.

I've stayed vegan all week except for one slip at an italian restaurant. I didn't resist the garlic cheese bread. I'm not following the menu very closely but am subsituting similar recipes I already know I like. What's funny is today I really want garlic cheese bread again. I had no idea THAT is what I would miss, since I rarely eat it.

I'm iffy. I was doing great but last night my plans for dinner were changed and I ended up at a Chinese food place. I did order veggie but I'm sure it wasn't vegan. I feel awful today and can't seem to get a grip on my food or my thoughts. Ugh! I'm so tired and really want some coffee and I don't know what I'm eating for dinner. Wow, you think MSG in the Chinese is causing this confusion? Mars5788

Wow, Mars, I'll bet it is the MSG. Or you're just feeling lousy because the Chinese was so good and it's so hard to get back on track. I was having a lousy day on Tuesday and it helped to vent here. By Wednesday I was much improved! Don't beat yourself up, just start where you are and give yourself credit for making the effort!

I've been right on track except one time - I planned on having spaghetti with marinara a few days ago and grabbed the wrong bag out of the freezer - one of the ones with meatballs in it that I make for my husband and son. So technically, it had meat in it even though I didn't eat any meatballs. I haven't actually eaten any meat in over a year, so it was a really dumb mistake on my part. I don't even know why I freeze marinara, anyway, since it's so easy to whip up at the last minute. As a side note, I made Alicia Silverstone's Sweet Potato and Lentil stew tonight (recipe on this site somewhere - I printed it out a few days ago) and it was really good - everyone in my family liked it. It's super filling, though, so I'll probably just make half next time because it makes a lot!

Planning everything ahead of time and doing all the shopping for week one the day before I started really helped. Other than that candy I unthinkingly put in my mouth on day 1 before I'd gotten rid of all the non-vegan candy, I have stayed vegan all week, and have only eaten a small amount of higher-fat or higher-sugar foods. I'm happy with it, and I think if it's this easy for the next two weeks, I'm going to repeat the three weeks with just a few tweaks to the menus (now that I have a better idea of which menus and recipes work for me). My kid complains a little about the lack of meat, but she's still eating plenty of the food I make, so I'm not going to take her complaining too seriously: she's 18; if she wants meat, she can go buy it.

I'm struggling. I'm one that gets so distracted by the littlest things and so find I do all the other things before the thing I should be doing. I'm not a good planner. I tend to give up easily when I hear so many different opinions. How am I supposed to know what's right for me?! Every once in awhile I may make a recipe. To this day I've made two. Better than none I suppose. I'll keep hoping one of these days I break through whatever barrier I have.

Hey Duhdbl, i too find I don't plan very well, but I can't fret over it. It will make me go crazy. I've only made 2 receipes so far, very yummy, the lentil and sweet potatoe soup, and chilli, but I didn't adjust the receipe to make a smaller portion (poor planning), but it was so good I didn't mind. Next time I will. So you see, your not alone.

duhbld, you don't have to plan or make recipes for it to work, but if you're struggling, you might want to make a "mini-plan"; that is, list all the foods that are ALREADY in your house that would make a good vegan meal. Potatoes? Great baked or microwaved, good hot or cold. Cook up a bunch of them. Spaghetti, toast, whatever you have, just make a list and call that your plan. That way at least when you're hungry, you have an idea of what's in the house that's vegan.

I too have fell off the planet a few times. But I get up and start over again. I love love love coffee, so I'm not giving it up. Just cutting back, and I use soy creamer. Really good. Also sometimes I heat 1/2 cup chocolate soy milk and 1/2 cup coffee. Great. I was hoping to lose a few pounds.....as I get older it gets harder to lose. sigh......

I have not been using the recipes here, more of just general planning. I LOVE this forum..I have no friends who are vegan, so there is no one for me to share these kinds of thoughts with. Although one of my kids is a vegetarian its not the same...and she's my kid.."talking" with the other people here has motivated me to clean up my diet a lot..I have been vegan for a few years (vegetarian for what feels like forever) with no problems (staying away from animal products...), but I have the sugar/ chocolate addiction from hell. I have found this forum very inspiring...thank you my fellow vegans (and wanna be vegans)...no judgements...be kind to yourself and never give up!)

The coffee shop at work offers a cheap cup of coffee (I get decaf) and they have Silk and Chocolate Silk as creamer choices, so once in a while (not since the new year, but I may when they open back up), I get a cup that's half chocolate Silk and half decaf coffee, and call it a "mocha" -- not bad for $1.49.
