Exercise - foods to fill you up
Posted Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 7:18 PM
I am struggling getting enough calories to fill me up and stay active. I am going snowshoeing this weekend. Any recommendations for protein based snacks! I am also gluten free....

Do these have to be shelf-stable snacks, or will you have some refrigeration on your trip? The first things I thought of were dried fruits and nuts.

Hello, No refrigeration. I thought there were no nuts on this plan...I may bring some anyway along with peanut butter. Fruit doesn't really fill me up. I find no change in hunger level after eating fruit. I will eat fruit in and with things for nutritional value, but have not found it to be a hunger curber.

Larabars are vegan. Fruit and nuts.

You said you're having trouble getting enough calories. Even Dr. McDougall says that in that case, some nuts or other higher-fat vegetable foods (avocados, olives) are okay in small amounts.

Yeah, I am breaking some rules to up my calorie intake, but my challenge is finding the food of substance for exercise especially an all day snowshoe trek that is challenging. I am fairly active so find this diet drains me of my energy. Not enough fuel.

With no refrigeration, I'd definitely go with a good trail mix of nuts and dried fruits, some low-fat crackers, and maybe some canned vegan foods like three-bean salad, soup, etc., that you can either heat up or eat cold.

You can have nuts on this plan; it's vegan and low-fat, but not non-fat. I have found a handful of nuts in my morning oatmeal makes a big difference for me in feeling full. Just don't overdo it.

I'm with you Dumpster. I find that I'm way more tired on this program than when I was just a vegetarian. Because of that, I may have to forgo this program after the 21 days and just be a vegetrarian, with my mind set of not eating as much of chicken or seafood. I also find it is very overwhelming if you start to think of all the other things you use like, vitamins, prescriptiions, thou, I have been pretty mindfull about soaps, hair products, buying only those not tested on animals.

Canned beans or Fantastic foods makes a great instant refried beans. The instant just needs hot water, the canned, just an opener. Hummus sandwich is also good. I find I have to rethink what a snack or meal is. To eat healthy, I have to follow a different path from main stream. The media tries to sell us healthy snacks, but vegans need to find their own way. We all did fine before sports drinks and protein bars.

I'm with you, Lyniefenton, about how much more tired I feel on this program than I did as a 90% vegetarian for the past 20 years. I know it takes time for the body to adjust to changes, but I also think long-term lifestyle changes have to be manageable and realistic for them to stick. A lot of people are feeling hungry and tired on this program, and I am one of them. Plus I started exercising again when the plan started, and I have not dropped an ounce! I know it's only been a week, but I've made some major diet changes (cut out dairy, which I ate a ton of, and processed cereals, which I ate more than a ton of, and eggs, and processed sweets, and I have not cooked with oil (though I am not against that - it's just that I have been making a lot of soups), and have only had a handful of nuts every day in terms of fat) and am not feeling the expected "clean energized" feeling in addition to even a little weight loss. I like it that I am off dairy and processed cereals, and I really like it being vegan because I am a huge animal lover, but I think doing this long-term would be tough if I don't see any increases in my energy (and decreases in my hunger) levels .

I think those of you who are feeling hungry and tired need to eat more. Sounds like I'm being flip, but I'm not. You're not getting enough calories. Eat. Eat a LOT for a while. It'll level out.

Hey rb, and serenevannay, Not for nothing, but eating more?? I have breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack, all of which make me full, so how much more do I need?? And if I want to lose weight, which I have, 3 lbs in the first week, but what are the portion sizes that your eating? I have regular size, not small and not eating two servings at once. Maybe I am detoxing, but how long before you feel energized? I feel if i start exercising, I'll be sleeping by 7!

I can't speak for rb, but I'm eating large portions and walking 2-4 miles a day. I lost too much weight this week, in my opinion, but I know it will level out. Maybe you need more calorie-dense foods. Are you eating beans, starchy veggies, and/or whole grains with most of your meals?

Whenever an individual makes changes in their diet, or routine, if the changes are significant, you can and should expect to feel "different"...most of us are addicted to something that we eat a a lot of (sugar, white flour etc) and once you begin removing that from the diet (or at least reducing your intake) your body WILL react...fatigue, headaches, constipation or excessive gas and or loose or frequent bowel movements are all among some of the common reactions to "detoxing"....be patient, drink LOTS of water, snack on healthy, whole foods and give yourself a little "wiggle room"....by that I dont mean eat a Big Mack or a hotdog...but it wont ruin your plan if you love commercial granola (vegan of course) and treat yourself to a cup with some rice or soy milk on the weekend...life cant be all sacrifices and denials to one's self...you will also adjust to eating less food over all..which most of us could benefit from (underweight or eating disorders excluded) . i always remind myself it didnt take 3 weeks for me to fill myself with sugar and junk and it will take some time (and YES some NEW and maybe uncomfortable sensations) for me to rid myself of all the accumulated junk in my body. Don't doubt yourself, and dont give up!

I have been eating beans, salads, made tofu scramble. The two receipes I made and have been eating those quite a bit are lentils and sweet potatoe soup, yummy, and the heartly chilli, also yummy. So, i know i need to incorporate more veges, which is no problem cuz I do like them. I think the hard part is all the shopping to get what you need to eat. Like I said before, I've been a vegetarian for 20 years, but never really made non dairy things, (tofu), what about bread? I ate some today at lunch but do I need to worry so much about that as well> I usually eat pumpernickel, or whole wheat, whole grain. Also, I do have whole wheat pasta around.

do I need to worry so much about that as well I say don't worry about anything! I would look at the breads and decide which ones are vegan and keep buying those rather than the non-vegan ones. Much easier to add what you like than subtract what you don't like.

This past week or so, I've also felt a bit off, tired & not being able to push myself as well during workouts most days. But, one the flip side, I feel much lighter & calmer than I have in a really long time. So, I know that it is mostly a detox reaction & that I will be feeling incredible & full of energy in the near future!
