Protein?
Posted Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:53 AM

My husband went to our doctor a few days ago and told him of our new vegan diet. He expressed concern that we are not getting enough protein. From my reading, it seems that this is regarded as pretty much a non-issue in the vegan community--that sufficient protein can be had from plant sources and that one doesn't need to worry about combining amino acids to achieve "complete" proteins. Can the diet and medical professionals comment on this? Thanks!

Not getting enough protein is definitely a non-issue on a vegan diet. I'm sorry but not surprised to hear that a medical professional is misinformed and misinforming the public.

Every plant has protein. Fruit not as much as all the others: grains, legumes, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Fun fact: broccoli gets 1/3 of its calories from protein!

If I had a cup of beans and a cup of white pasta, I would have more than half of my protein needs taken care of for the day! It's that easy.
