Help, I need motivation.
Posted Monday, September 13, 2010 at 2:45 PM
I need to get motivated to exercise. It used to be a daily part of my routine. Now, a year after toe surgery I have become lazy and not been walking or lifting weights. I see pic of myself, almost 20 pounds over weight, but even this doesn't help. Anyone have thought of feel the same way? [quote]I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Having had several leg/knee/ankle injuries/surgeries, I hear you. For me what worked was getting my dogs out to walk at the same time each day. They became an alarm clock for me and I couldn't resist those sweet little faces. Even when my work schedule changed, and now we walk before light at 6:00 am, the one I have left, is still happy to keep me company. Dogs are an amazing motivator and it gives me a quiet time to think about my day and kind the calm and peace I need to let it be its best. On my bad days I remember the amount of unconditional love they give me and remind myself that a walk is a small return.
Always offer kindness and a soft word to the beings around you; You do not know their journey. Your words can be the hug they need or the shove that breaks them.

I have my hubby and son as motivation. If I don't get going toward walking after dinner, I'll usually hear "aren't you going to walk tonight?" I can choose to walk or not, but that's usually enough to make me be honest with myself and consciously have to choose. If I choose not to walk, I have to recognize that I chose not to walk. Oceandog, I agree that dogs are a great motivator. I made a rule 9 years ago when Sam came into my life that we would walk twice a day, every day, no matter what. Now that little Pippin has joined us, we have a challenge because she is a reluctant walker, but we still go, twice a day, every day, no matter what (except extreme cold, which happens here in Minnesota, or extreme rain because none of us like walking in the rain). I wish I could offer more help with motivation to exercise, but I'm afraid I struggle too. but I have to say that this week my energy levels are improving and I actually look forward to doing some exercise. I had a broken foot which took for freaking ever to heal this year, but finally I can do yoga and aerobic activity and hopefully if my energy keeps improving I can form a habit. By the way, if you are wondering, yes I did walk every single day, 2x a day, even with my foot in a cast. It was slow and hobbling, but we walked darn it.

BlondRenee, I don't know if this will help you, but it was a big motivator for me: osteoporosis. The risk of osteoporosis goes up dramatically if one does not exercise. It's not just that exercise is good for weight loss, but it is also good for heart health, brain health, bone health, muscle strength, and overall wellbeing. All that stuff about how exercise raises your endorphins? It's actually TRUE. And, though you may feel hungry right after exercise (drink water), regular exercise actually moderates and lowers the appetite over the course of the day. All good benefits!!!

I wear a pedometer all day. I walk 10,000 steps even if it means walking in place to get there. It really motivates me to go for a walk. I check that thing all the time during the day to see how active I've been!

Start small and start with today. Say I will do this today and probably tomorrow. When tomorrow comes say the same thing. I am not sure hanging up a bad pic of you will help. You don't need to beat yourself up. We exercise and eat well because we LOVE ourselves. My exercise consists of my favorite tunes on my i pod. I do love my tunes. Walking with my tues is MY Time, for ME. So find a way to enjoy it. My all time favorite exercise tho is watching dancing with the stars or so you think you can dance and using my eliptical or treadmill. When the fast songs come on I fly!! Mix it up go for a bike ride, rollar skating or a swim if it's warm. REmemeber how good you feel afterwards.. once you get back in the habit, it will be fun and easy again.

I usually time my treadmill walk to a favorite TV program (different ones each day) - when I'm watching TV, I'm not so much thinking about what my feet and legs are doing. My hubby puts in a movie because commercials let him remember that he's on the treadmill but a movie is all-encompassing, no interruptions. He's even figured out how to play videogames while walking! FWIW we have the TV on a wall mount (like they have at the fitness centers) so that it is eye level so we can stand straight while walking and adjust the angle to where it's comfortable to focus on. Thank heaven for remote controls - we can change things at will without stopping. --Deb

oh and yeah, we use a treadmill instead of going "out" for a walk because then there's no excuses - no rain, no snow, too hot, too cold, too dark, too windy, too dangerous (we live on a rural main road, no sidewalks, few streetlights) when it's right there in the finished basement --Deb

One year i joined a gym.. yea go figure. My girlfriend said she would find a way to get paid to lose weight. She did. She got a paper route around her neighborhood that she could walk. She could barely walk around the block when she started. It took her 2 hours. The time to complete it got shorter, she got a lot smaller and she got a paycheck. Also she didn't have to take diabetes medicine anymore.

I think the most important thing is finding something that you love to do. Being active really needs to be a lifestyle and is easier if you surround yourself with like-minded people. Walking is great but to help prevent things like osteoporosis you need to do something more jarring like jogging or skipping. For cardio health you need more intensity like swimming or biking. For strength, balance etc. weight lifting is best. But everyone has to start somewhere...my husband and I started biking (mountain biking) together and with another couple which has now grown into a group of 12-15 people 3 times a week. Our oldest member is 65 our youngest 18, with every decade in-between. When we started 5 years ago I couldn't bike more than a mile on flat ground without being winded. You just have to be detemined and start. I swim once/week in the winter, snowshoe and hike and have even taken classes in a gym. Anyways, my main point is experiment, try different ways to be active. Every bit counts.

That's what I like about the treadmill, I can increase the intensity of the workout by changing both speed and incline (from flat to something that feels like a 45 degree angle - I rarely go that high, my knees don't like it) I can increase the intensity of the workout without having to invest hours and hours into it (who of us has unlimited hours to just bike ride every day for 2 or 3 hours?) We're budgeting to get a good set of hand weights sometime this winter for the whole family to use. I am looking forward to that. --Deb
