Fast Food
Posted Friday, January 8, 2010 at 6:47 AM
I really appreciated the dining out segment today -- I wasn't quite sure how to handle that, and I haven't had to deal with it yet. For those who are doing this for ethical as well as health reasons, though, you might want to skip the fast food. Fast food restaurants support factory farming, cruel slaughterhouse practices, and environmentally irresponsible methods -- like using beef raised on clearcut rainforest land (although McDonalds' website says they now have a policy against this). Even sticking to vegan choices at fast food restaurants still means spending money to support these restaurants and helping to perpetuate these practices, so I try to avoid them altogether. I don't mean to lecture or anything, but sometimes we just don't think about these things!

I completely agree! I don't eat fast food and haven't for at least 3 years, other than once last summer when we were going to the beach for vacation and there was literally no where else to eat. It ended up being a 5 hour drive and took way longer than we thought it would to get there so we were unprepared. I don't like fast food any more and it made me sick that one time, so I have no desire to have it again.

I quit fast food LONG time ago. It's just plain disgusting. Just breathing the air in those places is greasy. Even traveling, if I can find a fast food restaurant, I can find a grocery store.

On the other hand; if we could get some healthy vegan choices available in these places at value menu prices, this could be a good thing. And that won't happen as long as healthy vegan choices are boycotted by the primary customer base. Not saying there is much to boycott right now . . .

Hi DrDeb - I appreciate your post on fast food restaurants. If anyone is interested, watch Food Inc. (now on DVD) which spends a bit of time on the McDonalds phenomena. (Fast Food Nation is another great one). Burger King and Harvey's both offer salads and a very delicious veggie burger (hold the cheese) if anyone is in a pinch.

It takes just a little bit more effort to find a pizza place to stop at and get a veggie sub or a veggie pizza (hold the cheese please!) And in the process you will be supporting a local business owner rather then a mega corp.

You're right, Nanav. And interestingly, here's a link on this very topic from PCRM that was sent out yesterday: http://www.pcrm.org/newsletter/jan10/burgers.html

I am a manager at a local fast food joint. I have been working there for two years now. When I was just a vegetarian, I would get the grilled cheese sandwiches or the vegetable/tomato and cheese sandwich. Now that I am vegan, for the last week all I have been eating there is the salads (minus the cheese) and the apple slices.

Keep in mind, many veggie burgers are not vegan. There's a handy blog I found that lists what you can order that is vegan at many popular chains and fast food restaurants. Healthy Voyager website: http://healthyvoyager.blogspot.com/2009/06/navigating-national-chains.html http://healthyvoyager.blogspot.com/2009/06/finagling-fast-food.html One caveat, they're still not always "healthy" though. I recently discovered that the Taco Bell beans and rice have partially hydrogenated soybean oil and the salsa has HFCS (all, of course, part of their new "Drive Thru Diet").

I stopped eating fast food a long time ago. I find it utterly disgusting. My grams and I were at the mall. And she wanted to get this ice cream thing at mcdonalds. So I went in of course since she wanted to get something there. I sat with her while she is sitting there eating this disgusting icecream thing. And all around me people are eating disgusting food. Hamburgars and fries. I felt queezy looking at everyone. --- A book that talks about fast food is "fast food nation". It talks about the history, whats in fast food fries and so on.

I know the feeling. I don't eat fast food, either, but I used to travel literally every week and wanted to be prepared if I ever got stuck and had to make do.

I travel with a hot-plate and a pan. I thought the post saying, "if you can find a fast food joint, you can find a grocery store" was pretty spot on. I am going to keep that in mind from now on.
