Looking forward to January
Posted Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 1:47 PM

I'm really looking forward to getting another kickstart going. The holiday season, with its myriad eating-out occasions has me off track a bit (but at home we're still doing pretty well).

I agree. I'm 100% at home. Probably 99% in restaurants. Drops to 98% when it's a business luncheon with a set menu. Probably 97% when I'm at someone else's house. No matter how many questions you ask, just no way to know the ingredients unless you are in control.

yup - that's one reason we're bringing our mac'n'cheez for Christmas dinner as a "side dish". Other folks can have the ham with it(and that works nicely for them) and I can have that plus whatever veggie sides are available (usually a tossed salad and some sort of cooked veg like peas or sweet potato).

My sister-in-law was kind enough to call with questions, which is very thoughtful. But people have habits that they just don't think about.

A friend had a few of us over a couple weeks ago and made vegetable soup so I could eat it. After we were finished and I complimented how good the soup was she let me know she used a "little bit of beef broth for flavor, but NO meat chunks!!"

I just prefer to eat at home. Over the holidays it's way difficult.

I understand. A friend went out of her way to make both regular chili and veggie chili when she had us over a while back. And served it with rice cooked in chicken stock (I watched her pour the chicken stock into the rice!) Needless to say, I skipped the rice with my chili.

Boy am I familiar with all of those examples! If you add in no gluten on top of it, I only have 3 choices, eat it and normally get sick or only eat my food or skip it.

I am getting ready to go to So Cal to visit with family. Fortunately with this part of my family, they don't like to cook and know my sister and I a "special diet" Smile so they don't bother and I do the cooking! 20 years of training there!

If that was an option I'd take it. Fortunately, when we go visit my family next week for a couple days, I got a good deal on a 'suite' type hotel, so we have a kitchen in our room (full fridge, stove top, microwave, sink, dishwasher, pots, pans, dishes, etc). So, we're going to put jars of chili, soup, etc in a cooler and bring meals with us. They also have a complimentary full breakfast available, so I can just get a bowl of oatmeal and not feel like I'm wasting money the way I do when I have to pay for the non-pastry side of the breakfast buffet - and still only get some fruit and oatmeal.

I still have no idea what the plans are as far as when we'll be visiting with the extended family, but hopefully it won't be for meals.

Deb,

Good luck, being with family can be stressful under the best of circumstances, but when diet is added in, wow.

I have been told in the past that being with family isn't necessarily stressful. I guess I look at it differently as my dog has Addison's Disease. He doesn't produce glucocorticosteroids and can't handle stress. Your mind interprets the difference between a wedding and a funeral. Chemically your body handles it the same. So with that in mind, I view any time I have to be away from home as stress! haha

Fortunately, being with my family is less stressful than the ILs but then there's the added stress of being away from home. That's one reason we choose to get a hotel even if we could probably stay with family. It gives us a place that is 'ours' to retreat to.

I sure understand that! I used to not visit my mother frequently due to extraordinarily extreme issues with my step-father.

Then my son grew up, moved to that area, married a woman (who also doesn't cook) so I stay with them and have the time of my life! My daughter-in-law gives me total control of the kitchen (I think she may be afraid of it!) We get along very, very well. I try hard not to go anywhere her friends and peers are though, as she is a well-dressed fashion gal and I border on eclectic/hippy/minimalist comfort clothes wearing without a fashion clue. Very Happy

With all of that said, we have a great time! Then I "visit" my mom during the day and when HE acts up, I suddenly remember something needing my attention where he isn't! Smile and leave.

I can't wait for the new kickstart to begin.. and see if there are some great recipes..and Bob Harper will be part of it.. I am wondering how much a part...

Wouldn't it be nice if the kickstart offered an option where if you had place to sign in and enter the foods you eat and then break it down to calories, fat, sodium, vitamins etc?

I am thinking moving a whole recipe into the calendar. then saying I ate .25 or .50 (1/2)... That way you don't have to enter every ingredient individually.

Also they could set up a well used ingredient list.. rasins, avacado, apricots, grn pepper, broccoli, firm tofu, x firm tofu, soft tofu, amy's products, oatmeal, maple syrup, agave, various soy milk, almond milk, beans etc?

it could be really cool.. esp if it coninsided with their recipes. When they found out if it was used they could even ok submitted recipes from users and have a space for reviews... like allrecipes.. but better.

just a thought.. i guess this should have been a new thread..

I am really looking forward to january.

Fortunately, we don't have those kinds of stresses (with divided families and step folks). But, we're not exactly 'mainstream' parents and the 'society standard' coercive parenting gets on our nerves after a bit, so we just go ahead and 'invent' a reason to get back to the hotel, where we can be 'us'.

I have said it in a previous post and I still maintain you and I could be friends if we knew each other! Smile

I have gotten quite inventive over the years for reasons I am needed elsewhere. The very best though is my AD dog, he requires regular medicine given with meals. It just so happens his dinner meals corresponds with the end of the day and shorter temper and a few glasses of wine with the SF. So I say oh GEE look at the time, I need to feed "the kids" and off we go.

Works like a charm. My mom is aware, SF is glad to see me go and all is well. Bosco eats early enough that I still have plenty of evening to curl up with him, and Juliette (the other pooch) with a good book or hang out with my son and his wife.

All and all it is a great situation. When I visit the other side, I get along better with my step mother than my father and I do stay in a hotel there. But we have all the kinks worked out by now.

They all think I am odd and it is me and I am okay with that and go with it. Smile

I should add that my sister, mom, SM, and I all get along wonderfully and have a blast when we get together. Even my mom and SM get along famously!

You should check out SparkPeople.com - they have exactly what you are asking about. You can enter your individual foods or create recipes and save them, keep a log of all your foods, whatever nutrients you want to track, everything. You can join teams and there are several vegan teams. Check it out. I am Wild4Stars there also.

I don't 'do' SparkPeople but they do have a feature linked to their website that allows you to enter the recipe and it calculates everything for you per portion - which is nice if you make a recipe and get, say, 8 servings instead of the 6 that the recipe indicated (maybe you served it with a tossed salad so you ate less of the entree, for example). If you are 'signed up' on their site, you can then save that recipe so you can grab the info quickly later on without re-entering all the info.

There's also a site http://caloriecount.about.com/ where you can get the nutrition label info for almost any product, whether packaged stuff (like almond milk) or fresh produce. That can be handy for items that SparkPeople doesn't have already - you can add that as your own custom item (I think). And, other people can see that if they search on it and it will show that it was entered by another user (rather than the 'owners' of the site).

Hi All:

I was not very involved in the September Kickstart. However, I am happy to report that I changed my life to that of a vegan diet in the last January Kickstart and I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that it has been a year. Thanks Kickstart and to all those out there who educated and supported. I could not have done it without you.

Don't get me wrong there have been several hurrdles and many times I have crossed over to Flexitarian (eating foods that have butter/eggs in them...have pretty much been able to avoid the cheese altogether) but for the most part I have held to my convictions even during times of temptation.

I laugh because last week someone made a "Vegan" dish for me also and after eating it and asking several times what great spices she used, she told me she had used chicken broth! Yeck! What could I say.........

As much as I am not a "Pusher" of my new life style, I have found that there are "Pushers" of me to "Just have some ham.....it won't kill you."

I have found that I now have an adverse olfactory reaction to meat and seafood. Im not sure if Im going crazy or what but the smell has actually made me sick.

I have not lost any weight (surprisingly) but my husband lost 40 pounds just staying to the Kickstart program.

I am happy that I have taken this journey. I am happy I consider what animals must go through to provide us with/a food. It has changed me forever.

Good luck in the January Kickstart to all! Laughing

Dang Y'all

Mind if I join you for another Kickstart.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas / holiday.

Great to see so many McDougallers here. Debbie, are you the Debbie of "Its Starch-based not Veggie-based" fame ??

Anyway, following on from Mollyhorn's excellent advice, I just wanted to mention something that I read in a McDougall newsletter. Apparently cruciferous vegetables can cause thyroid problems. [EDIT: On further inspection of said newsletter --December 2005-- it became clear Dr McDougall does not believe that avoiding cruciferous vegetables will have any noticable effect on Hypothyroidism] Are any of you aware of this ?? If you are then I do apologise for boring you with this information again.

Great to see you all.

Speak to you soon.

Theodore

P.S. - Wild4Stars, I see your name at the bottom of the screen as registered user online. What are you doing up at this time ?? Isn't it like 4.00 in the morning where you are ??

Never make assumptions. You'll end up being an A**, and the UMP will TION you. -- Coach Smiley -- Fresh Prince of Bel Air
