packable snacks?
Posted Friday, January 8, 2010 at 2:35 PM
I am going to be out for a bunch of hours and found myself limited in what to take for a boost when I am on the street and out and about all day. Since a lot of this diet involves cooking at home, things are not that transportable that I have been making (like soups). Besides rice crackers and fruit, any ideas of throw-it-in-your-bag-and-go snacks? Thanks.

Crackers and fruit mostly work for me, but here are some other ideas: Roasted garbanzos, kale chips, microwave potato chips: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2008/08/healthy-crunchy-three-guilt-free-snacks.html Popcorn keeps surprisingly well, and I love it. Don't know if you can get these, but the Asian aisle in our grocery store has these nori snacks -- little strips of seasoned seaweed. They're totally addictive to me.

you need a good thermos! i take soup for lunch at least a couple times a week. it's also good for packing smoothies. one with a screwtop and insulation. mine is made by lunchmate, but there are several kinds. wide-mouthed ones are sometimes called "food jars." http://www.to-goware.com/ has lots of cool stuff (esp the bamboo utensils, which i carry everywhere), as does amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=food+jar+thermos&x=0&y=0). camping stores have them on sale sometimes. but snackier things, besides nuts and fruit, are Lara Bars (I break one into 2-3 pieces to eat over the course of the day). i have been known to carry an individual-sized box of soymilk in my purse. and sometimes there's a small 1/2-cup size container of hummus with baby carrots in there. my friends make fun of me, but that's ok--i'm not hungry.

One of my all-time favorites is bags of sugar-snap pease. They are pretty durable and can stand to be out of the fridge for a lot longer than other veggies. Sprouted wholegrain hummus sammies and carrots back well, too. Of course apples! Lani

Fruit ~ apples, bananas, grapes are easy to carry Dried fruit ~ I love dried apricots and little boxes of raisins, very filling. Raw nuts ~ I like Brazil nuts, just one or two can curb my appetite until I can find something appropriate Veggies ~ baby carrots, celery, green or red pepper strips. And I always carry my own salad dressing. I can find a salad almost any place, but not always an appropriate dressing. Hope that helps.

Luna Bars are vegan, easy to pack, and fairly healthy -- and they come in lots of good flavors. I also found a chocolate bar that was so delicious, I couldn't belive it was vegan. It is called Twilight, and it is made with rice-milk chocolate and caramel. It tastes just like Milky Way. There's a version with peanuts, and also one called Buccaneer that is rice-milk chocolate and nougat. They are from a company called Go Max Go. Not low fat, not healthy, but sometimes you just need a candy bar!

Larabars are vegan, fruits and nuts. VERY good, I almost always have one with me when I'm out and about.
