Has anyone ever tried Yerba Mate? My cousin tells me that is an alternative to coffe?? Does anyone know if it is good? Do you put things like sugar and milk in it?

It is an acquired taste, almost like a very strong tea. Some people like it with sweeteners and soy milk - Yerba Lattes used to be popular in Seattle when I was in graduate school there. I like it straight up like my coffee. I really have not seen any research indicating whether it's good for you or not.

I drink it every day. It is an acquired taste for some, I didn't have any problem with it. Kind of depends on what you are used to drinking. I drink with only lemon, but as Susan mentioned you can add your fave milk alternative or sweetener. You definitely need to be sure not to steep for too long, though!

my favorite coffee substitute is Roma - roasted grain beverage. I drink it with 1 tsp agave and some unsweetened almond milk. It is so yummy. It taste like a mocha drink. This has helped me get off coffee and processed sugar. Try it.

Thank you for your replies. Do either of you know where I can buy it so that I may try it?

Depends where you live. Whole Foods or most natural food markets will carry it. The most popular brand seems to be Guyaki, which I haven't personally tried. Traditional Medicinals also has one, and you can occasionally find it loose leaf also. Hope that helps!

I drink it everyday after dropping coffee. Since the kick start began, I switched from 1/2 and 1/2 for creamer to So Delicious Coconut Creamer. it's Yum, a tasty morning drink that's good for digestion. Trader Joe's has the best price on Guayaki Yerba Mate in yellow packaging.

Thanks for the suggestions on where to find it. I actually found it at Raley's the other day but didn't buy it. I guess Im not ready to give up on coffee...................yet. I do think I will buy it and try it though. So coconut creamer, huh? SOunds good but doesn't the coconut milk have a lot of fat in it?

Dr Michael Greger creates annual DVDs of the latest nutritional research. These are excellent and well worth the $20. http://www.drgreger.org/DVDs/ In his latest set he recommends against drinking Yerba Mate. I don't remember the details but I stopped drinking it after seeing his report from the research community.
