Very Happy...my goals: I am here to learn about planning my menus to better stick with this healthy way of eating. I need to make exercise a normal part of my day and lose some weight.

I'm in my 4th year of feeling more energy and being off diabetes meds as a vegan. My A1C (for those who know about such things) is now normal -- 5.2.

My doctor looked me in the eyes a couple of months ago while we were discussing my lipid levels. We had agreed it was best if I could get my body to lower those levels (or in HDL's case to raise). He prescribed diet and exercise, looked me in the eyes and said simply and sincerely, 'you can do this'. Just calmy, 'you can do this'.

I want to remember that calm certainty as I face any challenges during this kickstart. It's just plain realistic that I can do this. It's realistic to expect good results.

I'm glad and lucky to have the support of this program. Smile... Cool

Congratulations for all the good work with your blood sugar.

Are you maintaining high lipids by eating too much saturated fats? I'm concerned about keeping mine down, but finding there are plenty of satfats in vegan junk food. I read that high lipids can lead to diabetes.

Hey Greent!

Well, I gotta say your doc is right - you can do this, but I prefer to say "I will do this". It somehow makes us step up a little closer to the plate.

Lipids! For many people, fats need to be really limited in the diet, even those from plant sources. Dr. McDougall and Esselstyn have had dramatic success with these approaches, and it dovetails perfectly with the 21 - day PCRM guidelines - just be aware of fats.

Keep it simple: fire up your rice cooker, get a pot of beans cooking and cans of beans to make it easy, stock up on veggies and fruits and you're there.

Congratulations on your new commitment!

Hi Jean,
could be the fat intake. This Kstart should help with that! Could be the lack of regular exercise, or a combination...or something else (!!).

High lipids and diabetes are certainly associated. Dunno about a causal relationahip. My doc says there is a theory that lipids go up in response to blood glucose levels spiking. I eat 6 small meals now hoping to moderate that.

Getting rid of some visceral fat helps triglyceride levels I hear.

I think that concentrating on good menu planning and regular exercise will address enough things for me to see a difference.

Hi GreenT -

I'm green with envy over your A1C! Well done! I'm on my way there to those numbers too but not quite there yet.

Re: the lipid levels. I agree with what you've said, but according to my doc some bodies just produce too much (my HDL is good, my LDL is not good). Despite all other numbers showing marked improvement my LDL # did not budge one bit Crying or Very sad So, I'm on meds for it (for) now, but am hoping to get off them in time by staying committed to this vegan plan.

And you're so right - exercise is so important and an area where I REALLy need a kick in the behind. (picture me lying prone on the couch watching all those fabulous athletes compete during the Olympics! I shoulda been doing some sit-ups while watching at the very least, not practising my cross-country ski technique into the kitchen for yet another snack!) Rolling Eyes

All we are saying is "Give Peas a Chance"

Thanks Lani and Mariberry,

I'm hoping that by focusing on the low-fat menus and stepping out a bit I see more results. The steps I've taken so far are encouraging.

I want to look at what I am doing more than what I am giving up. This program helps.

I can do this...I will do this.... Cool
