Mmmm, coffee

Has anyone noticed whether or not coffee stalls your weight loss? I know it can be dehydrating, but if you drink water, I'm curious if it will still stall it at all.

Needless to say, without coffee, I'm not as much fun as I am when I do have it, but I'd hate for it to stall weight loss significantly enough for me to notice it. Shocked

I'd say I have 1-2 cups of coffee daily with some soy creamer and "Ideal Sweetener". Thoughts??

Thanks!

Legnerk,

There are some who say totally kicking the cafe helped with their weight loss. And others who say they detect no difference.

But overall, there are so many other areas that our diets can be improved and impacted for better health and fat loss that 1 - 2 cups a day with a little soy in it is, most likely, harmless.

So unless everything else is pure as the driven snow and you are certain this one last thing will turn the tide, I'd say concentrate elsewhere and enjoy the java!

As a diabetic, I was seeing my glucose spike oddly. Did a little research and found that caffeine can cause blood sugar spikes. So, my guess would be that for some people, coffee (caffeine) might affect weight loss/weight gain. There are probably some people who need a good kick in the metabolism and there are probably some who get stalled when drinking coffee.

Probably the most workable thing would be to cut out the coffee and see if you notice any change in the weight loss area. After a few weeks, you should be seeing some result - whether that's a resumption of losing, gaining because you're snacking in lieu of coffee, or staying the same. Then you can take it from there to work out which direction to head.

When I did the McDougall Ten Day program six years ago, coffee was not available. I got such a banging headache I could not function. One other lady was so addicted, she had to stay in her room the pain was so great from the caffeine withdrawal. Since then, he allowed us to go to the hotel or Starbucks and seek our own caffeine. The tea did not work to relieve me. I get coffee in dunkable tea bags so the amount I drink daily (1 cup) is very consistent.

Perhaps it does stall weight loss, I think I will try kicking it and seeing if I can break my plateau...

I really think it should not be the focus. It's not the big problem. It is the processed foods, the animal foods, etc.

What is "Ideal Sweetener"?

Definitely proceed with caution if you are a heavy coffee drinker. Withdrawing from that can be really painful. I could cut it pretty quickly because I had at most 1 cup of decaf per day at work, none on weekends.

Another possible maybe thing to look at is the effect of the non dairy milk and non nutritive sweetener. There is some research on the effect of non nutritive sweeteners and their effect on our bodies' weight regulation/calorie storage. Don't know a lot about it but it might be worth looking into as you back down the caffeine level slowly. Maybe the coffee itself isn't the issue but rather the sweetener.

I googled Ideal Sweetener - it's xylitol. If memory serves, any -itol is a sugar alcohol which is basically a non nutritive sweetener (no carbs, no calories, etc). The caveat with sugar alcohols is that they can, for some people, cause digestive problems, especially if used a lot (like multiple servings in a day, or a large serving all at once). I know that for me (YMMV) any sugar alcohols at all send me to the loo pretty quickly.

I'm not sure as to the effect of sugar alcohols on weight regulation. We'd have to let the experts weigh in on that aspect.
