Soy products

I am on day six of the vegan diet. The first few days I felt really good but I am starting to feel weird - almost a little nautious - I am eating alot of soy products. Does anyone else ever feel weird from too much soy? I am going to switch my milk to almond milk. Are there any soy limits recommended?

I wouldn't assume the soy is the cause of your nausea, but it certainly wouldn't hurt anything for you to choose other beans instead of soybeans, and to use rice milk instead of soy. (Rice milk is much lower in fat, anyway.)

No, but if you eat too much of anything you may feel nauseous. If all the soy you're eating is processed you may be consuming a bunch of other stuff with it. Too much salt or sugar or fat or what have you. I'd echo what Serene says--switch it up with other beans and focus on fresh vegetables. See how you feel. Do a search for soy in these threads. There are LOTS of posts about it that might be helpful as a guide, including several by Susan Levin. I really don't know why there's such a presumption that a vegan diet must emphasize or be based on soy--that's just not the case. I kinda find it aggravating. (Can y'all tell?) It's not a major component and it's just a silly little bean.

If you eat too much of anything, vegan or not, you can feel bad and nauseous. Just don't overdo it on the soy milk. There are so many alternatives like almond, rice, and how much of that stuff do you drink anyway? I use some milk alternatives in my coffee and tea, use it with my cereal and when I make a creamy soup or mashed potatoes. And that's about it. That is not an amount that would make me sick.

I stay away from soy personally. I have felt queasy this week but mostly when I was too hungry. Are you eating enough?

Soy can be great, but it can also be not-so-great. It's awesome that there are so many vegan convenience foods out there now that the world is starting to take notice of our way of life, but at the same time we can only trust as much as the corporations that make them tell us about them. In many instances they are no better than pizza pops, frozen tacos and the like! Even tofu is not the greatest. When used in moderation, sure, but I find so many vegans rely on it as a daily item. When buying soy it is imperative that it is organic...soy beans are one of the most genetically modified foods on the planet. Similarly, if you find yourself concerned with your soy intake, maybe alter the kinds of soy you are eating. Tempeh and miso are both soy, but are considered to be healthier (because of the fermentation process) and easier to digest for many people than tofu is. I personally prefer the taste of tempeh as well. My supermarket doesn't carry it, but there are several specialty stores in town that do.

My husband used to have a queasy feeling in his stomach when he ate soy, so we cut it out altogether. Then I learned that 90% of the soy in this country is grown from genetically modified seeds. So we tried using soy products that are certified organic, and he hasn't had the digestive problems with the organic soy.
