store bought bread
Posted Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 9:00 AM

Hi and good morning!
I hope everyone is enjoying the program as much as I am!

I was hoping someone could recommend a specfic brand of bread. We have found a few that work but not one that had the fiber, whole grains without the added sugar.

Some day I would like to learn to make bread but for now I have to stick to the store.

Thanks so much. Very Happy

I like Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted grain bread. It's in an orange bag, in the freezer section. It's great for toast in the morning.

I think Arnold brand has some good whole grain options if you can find them at your grocery store.

Another suggestion is to look around your local area - more and more artisan bakeries are popping up that make real whole grain breads fresh. If there are farmer's markets, check them out - many artisan bakeries have a space at the markets to draw clients to their shop in the off season.

I have a bread machine and love it. I have total control over what goes into my bread.

I tried the Ezekiel bread a time or two (different varieties) and it really only seemed okay for my taste when it was toasted and then had a topping added (jam, for example). I've noticed a similar thing with other breads once they are frozen then thawed - they tend to not be quite as "tender" (not sure if that's the right word) as fresh bread would be. If you can't make it yourself, my next choice would be going to a bakery that makes breads if that's possible or going to the bakery section of Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or wherever and getting a fresh, whole grain loaf that way.
