How is everyone making out?

I've actually been able to lose a tiny bit of weight this last week. I've given up my lunchtime cookie (just one, but apparently it's making a difference).

Oddly enough after spending most of my life obsessed with my weight, right now there is so much illness in family and people I love, my weight just doesn't have as much priority. I try each day when I eat (or overeat) to just make the very best choice I can. If I blow it, I start again with the next food I eat. Vegan isn't a problem, quantity and/or low fat is. For now it is all I can do. It is enough. I hope your journey goes smoothly with much health and happiness. Best wishes, Kym

Hi, I am doing great! For me it's not defined by weight, but by eating vegan, finding interesting and great tasting food. I am still exploring. I too could go the way of higher fat.. but I am cutting back on that.

Hi everyone, I am doing well with vegan eating at home and work. Still have a challenge getting it right when eating out or with family who tend to use milk, butter or cheese in everything. I am trying to educate them about my new way of eating without insulting them or their cooking. No weight loss but I have not put any more on either - which is a bonus as I am overweight. Like Oceandog and Cch22, this kickstart has been about vegan eating and finding new foods, making sure I am geting enough B12 etc - not portion control or low fat. I am saving that as something to cncentrate on in the next kick start in April, as I should have the foods sorted by then. Checochinican, I have 20-30 lbs I will happily give you at no charge. Wish I could just pack them up in a box and send them express.

Kiwi, would you mind if I send my extra 35 as well? We could share postage. I would love for her to have a back up, just in case.

Oh, thank you! You folks are so kind!!! I'll use 10 of the pounds you are sending, and share the rest with two neighbor ladies, both elderly widows, who look like a puff of air would blow them away.

Now if we could only figure out how to make it so. Many times in my life I have wished I could "undo" some extravagance. I find that only way to undo it is to stop doing it. Darn. I look forward to my move North, getting rid of most of my stuff, living simply, quietly, peacefully. Looking into a table top grill to grill my veggies to put on rice.

I'm still hanging in there. I don't eat 100% vegan and/or low fat but I'm a good 95% compliant. I'm actually moving towards getting back on track even more, now that the jumpstart got me started. This week I'm planning on continuing to move towards 100% low fat vegan (means giving up things like dairy-based desserts when I go out to eat) and also integrating exercise into my day again as well as some relaxing yoga. I see this as a process rather than an "all or nothing compliance" type of thing. This is what's working best for me right now. I still check out the PCRM websites for ideas and recipes, though . I've been eating off-vegan using my weight as an excuse. Thought I would love taking in the dairy and occasional meat. I was wrong! I hate it. Back to vegan, and looking foreword to it. One bit of good news - my system has adjusted to beans of any kind, in any amount, without the unpleasant disturbances of the digestive tract. I didn't really expect that, but I'll take it!

I didn't really expect that, but I'll take it! That's great! I've noticed that if I go a couple days without beans and greens, I gain about a pound. Then, the beans'n'greens fiber kicks back in and I clear out the system and drop that pound off again. I hope, for weight's sake, that you're using a bit more in the way of nuts, seeds, oils, and dried fruits than the kickstart typically contains. --Deb R

Deb, yes I am, but cautiously. Apparently the key to a vegan diet's ability to lower blood glucose to normal levels is the low-fat aspect.

If you're watching fat but need to add calories, dried fruit can help. It's low fat but packs a wallop on the calorie side - of course, that's mostly sugar but they do contain fiber as well. Or, eat [b]constantly[b] - lots of calorie and nutrient dense things that are low glycemic in nature. These are really tasty if you can find them: http://www.suncakes.com/Thrive.htm If I know I'm going to be on the go and need a snack, I'll often grab one of these (they are sold two per package) - I love the apricot ones. We also make our own granola balls (instead of bars we make them into meatball shapes) - I think I posted the recipe somewhere either this time or last kickstart. It's nut butter, liquid sweetness (agave for example), rolled oats, whole wheat, dried fruit and nuts etc for mix-in (cashew apricot and almond dried cherry are nice combos). The nut butter contains some fat but everything combined makes a nice, fairly low impact, portable snack or mini-meal.--Deb R

Thanks, Deb. I enjoy dried fruits, found a marvelous version of dates recently - can't remember what it was called. I'll stock up on those, as well as raisins, apricots, peaches, whatever I can find. My glucose meter will let me know if I am overdoing the sugar.

i have lost about 10 lbs total since January. i feel like i should have lost more by now but i guess i should stop being impatient. i walk my dogs almost every morning, walk at lunch several days a week, and go to the gym several days a week and have been doing the vegan diet since January. but like someone said if i go a couple days without whole grains i do tend to gain a little weight back. its a really interesting thing that i never really would have figured out on my own. ive been eating mainly (for dinners and lunches) brown rice, lots of veggies, and beans. when i do this my weight seem to slowly but steadily come down. if i stray for a couple days and say have a frozen burrito and french fries i can feel the weight creep up a little even though im still eating vegan food. the one "problem" i have with the vegan diet is i always need to be prepared ahead of time. its not really conducive to spur of the moment eating. i cant wait until the summer when the vegetables are soooo much better!!

i walk my dogs almost every morning, walk at lunch several days a week, and go to the gym several days a week and have been doing the vegan diet since January. That's moving, that's good. Make sure you're working on increasing the exertion in your workouts. I got 'lazy' last year and even though I was getting in 30-60 minutes of treadmill per day most days, I wasn't increasing the level (incline/speed) so it wasn't near as effective (though still better than nothing). I kicked it up when the Jan kickstart got underway and it's paying off - weight loss is still slow and steady but the biggie is my blood sugar readings are improving tremendously. Just had my blood work for A1C and cholesterol. A1C is slowly coming back down after being awful a year ago (isn't that always the way, it'll go up in a flash but take months to get back into line again!) Cholesterol numbers: HDL 66 LDL 77 (no meds) Quote:
but like someone said if i go a couple days without whole grains i do tend to gain a little weight back. its a really interesting thing that i never really would have figured out on my own. It's the fiber cleaning out the pipes - there can be a load of crap stuck in there (Literally! LOL) and fiber clears that out. Quote:
the one "problem" i have with the vegan diet is i always need to be prepared ahead of time. its not really conducive to spur of the moment eating. i cant wait until the summer when the vegetables are soooo much better!! We try to have lots of grabbables on hand - containers of pre-cooked garbanzos in the fridge (I'll nibble a handful of them as if they were peanuts); we'll make granola balls (instead of bars) with nut butter, rolled oats, whole wheat, agave, and assorted mix ins; lots of fresh fruit; salad veggies handy (pre-washed Olivia's organics salad greens, cherry tomatos, peeled and cut up cukes in the fridge, ditto for carrots and celery, etc). We keep a supply of frozen veggies on hand (corn, broccoli, spinach mostly) to supplement fresh - frozen spinach works just fine in a vegan quiche, whereas fresh is better for braising or eating in a salad. We also make several meals' worth of beans, rice, etc and store them in the fridge in "one recipe" serving sizes so we can throw things together. But, the biggie is basically just planning enough dinners to get from grocery trip to grocery trip and getting all the ingredients. Then we can pick which of those we want at any given time. Not to mention that I remember many times back in the meat-eating days when dinner plans had to change because we forgot to take something out to thaw. Lots easier to just grab some pre-cooked rice and beans, tomato sauce and spices and voila it's dinner! --Deb R

Make sure you're working on increasing the exertion in your workouts but thats hard!! i had major surgery in October 2010 so im working on getting back to feeling normal. if the weight comes off slowly i am *ok* with it for now as long as it steadily goes down. i just get frustrated sometimes, like everyone else. as far as planning goes, i find if i DO plan and prepare ahead of time i am golden and have plenty to eat. i have been making homemade hummus and another sort of artichoke spread that i think i found the recipe for on this site (they call it salad but it comes out like hummus) and if i have one of those, some sliced cucumbers or whole grain pita bread i have a good snack for work. ive been buying a lot more fruit which i never did before.
my surgery was on my jaw so i couldnt chew for a long time and still cant really chew that well so my husband has been making me fruit smoothies ever since i came home from the hospital. i usually have 2 a day. he puts banana, oj, silken tofu, frozen strawberries and blueberries, and chia powder in them. SO YUMMY! and i imagine super good for me (i hope!)

Help, I fell off the wagon. I've been on vacation for 2 weeks and I did try, (bought soy milk for my hotel room etc.) but eating out is just too hard -- and being out of my own environment. I am determined to just start eating right as soon as I get home. I even know I'm going to make the veggie lasagne - I guess thats a good sign. Not sure what happened with the weight I've lost, but this is so typical of my behavior -- loose 20lbs / gain 20 lbs.
