Insulin Dep. type 1 DM
Posted Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 4:37 PM

I am an insulin dep. DM. I wear a pump. I have beenvegan for 4 yrs. I have had times where I have had to eat dairy and my sugars are much more difficult to control. Can you explain why and point me to some literature?

Dr. Barnard points out in the intro video that dairy, even the low-fat stuff, is mostly lactose. Lactose is a complex sugar that breaks down into two simple sugars, galactose and glucose. So that would explain the effect on your blood sugar, wouldn't it?

Here's the FAQ page for dairy (you can find it by clicking Resources in the upper right also): http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/dairy.html

There's more info on the connection between dairy and diabetes there, with references to studies/papers at the bottom in the footnotes.

Hope that's helpful!

There are unsweetened plant milks like soy and almond available--I've come to prefer these myself. You'd know better about your own sensitivities, but maybe one of those would work better for you?
