Seasonal allergy symptoms
Posted Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 6:02 PM

Over the last two decades, I've experimented with different diets in the hope of reducing seasonal allergy symptoms. I can't say for sure if they've really helped, but I'm trying the 21-day kickstart with the same hope (also with the hope that I'll kick my constant craving for sweets). I've stuck to the diet so far - and have enjoyed the recipes more than I expected! - but, in the last week, my allergy symptoms (itchy eyes, runny nose, constant sneezing) have been even worse than usual. This may be wishful thinking, but I'm wondering if this is a sign that my body is detoxing -- and maybe my allergies will subside if I stick to the diet . . . Or maybe it's just plain coincidence that weed pollen levels are high right now. Has anyone experienced improvement in allergy symptoms as a result of a vegan diet? Some good-news stories would really help my motivation.

Hey SweetTooth,
Going vegan sure worked for me. As I had been a vegetarian for about 6 months before I went vegan I really think it was getting off the milk/cheese that did it. I'd always heard that milk caused congestion but I really didn't expect the dramatic change. No more post-nasal drip, my sinuses stopped being blocked all the time, I can really breathe through my nose--always! and mostly itchy eyes are gone. I say mostly because I still get that somewhat but think it's my mascara. I've just changed brands and haven't had any problems since.

I hope you find that in time these results will be your results too. For me it happened within the 21 days, just can't remember how far along. Also this was last January when allergens are not quite so strong.

Best wishes, Linda

Wow, ST – I am so glad you posted this! I just realized that everyone at my office is sniffling and sneezing like crazy... and I'm not! I went vegan in March, and yes, I definitely went through a detox. The hardest part for me was getting off sugar and dairy. (I chose to get off sugar – that's not required of vegans!)

But since then, I haven't gotten sick. And no allergies! What an awesome side effect. Very Happy

Hey Sweet Tooth,

When I first went vegan (Dec) I had a similar experience. I had a friend who had been a vegan for many years tell me to drink beet juice to help along the detoxing and it definitely worked for me. That was last January and I haven't had any allergy attacks, and have only been sick once. But being sick was due to being completely stressed out and in close contact with a mover with the flu, haha.

Anyway I drank beet juice and beet juice w/ carrot & kale or celery for several weeks. It really helped me detox and feel really great.

Thanks, everyone, for the encouraging stories. I've actually tried beet juice in a juice fast before, but that was only for a few days. Maybe I'll try drinking it for a while longer. In the meantime, here's hoping that the vegan diet pays off eventually. I'd love to quit the antihistamines!!
