Posting our blood glucose scores
Posted Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 3:00 PM

I'm starting with a great one today - 85. That's the lowest I've seen since I started testing.

I'll keep this thread going and hope other diabetics will join in. I also test before dinner and two hours later.

95 today, 93 yesterday.

These scores are lower than they've been in a long time, and I wonder if stopping smoking is the reason. Time will tell......

Congrats!
What a great idea to post your blood glucose - I'll be sure to check in on you and see how you're doing! My uncle switched to a vegan diet and was able to reverse his Type 2 Diabetes in about 8 months - it was awesome.

Being that I'm a type 1 and test my blood sugar roughly 5-7 times a day, i'll throw out my average, haha. My average low/high is 105/184 --- which is unbelieveable compared to what it was before. I started to stop eating meat last week and had some yesterday - but after the way I felt, i'm planning on giving it a real try. My blood sugars have been going low alot more and i've had to already lower my insulin. Today I was 114. Keep it up guys!

87 this morning. Ate a lot last evening, ending with waffles (Kashi) with maple syrup. Taking no meds and getting little exercise, so my scores depend on my diet and my general state of health. Seems to be pretty good right now! Stopping smoking was definitely overdue. Breathing has improved a little, in the six days since I quit.

How about some 2 hour post-meal numbers? I am very interested in whether or not these high carb meals will spike my BG.

I'll do some before and after testing tomorrow if you'd like - that way you'll know where I was starting from to see if it was a spike or if I was just being really "bad" and started out high before eating.

I didn't test before dinner last night but after dinner (2 hrs) my glucose reading was in the low 150s if I remember correctly. Now, that could look "high" if you're working on the tight control plan (under 140 after meals) but it's well within the general guidelines for diabetics (under 180 after meals). Dinner last night was nachos - black beans, avocado, corn tortilla chips, salsa, and not-cheese sauce.

I'll also go ahead and test after dinner tonight: quinoa and chickpea pilaf and braised kale. I'm pretty sure (from experience) that my two hour test will be well within range.

Note: I typically wait 30 minutes after eating (doing the dishes) to go walk on the treadmill for up to an hour. Then I get a glass of water and rest for a bit before testing.

Karen, when I first started the vegan diet, I was coming off the notorious "ultra low carbohydrate" diet. I expected the change to shoot my glucose up at first, and it did. After about 18 days, the scores came down and were better than they'd ever been.

Fasting this morning - 94.

I didn't test after a meal yesterday, but the two previous days were 95 and 96 two hours after dinner.

Okay, here's the breakdown of last night:

dinner: about 2 cups of quinoa chickpea pilaf with braised kale (a full soup bowl)
finished around 5:45
packed up leftovers and helped hubby with dishes
hit the treadmill around 6:25
walked for an hour
called my mom (she called while I was on the treadmill)
approx 7:50 tested (2 hrs fter dinner): blood glucose reading 95
Had a strawberry banana cocoa smoothie with sweetened vanilla almond milk and a little agave (a couple tbls divided by 3 since both hubby and son wanted some!)

Last evening my glucose was 93 two hours after dinner.

This morning's fasting blood glucose is 83.

I am on no meds and lately have been getting zero exercise, so these scores are significant, much better than any have been since I started keeping score in late November last year.

Last night, we had a wonderful mushroom chowder - chopped mushrooms, corn "milk" (cook kernel corn then puree to replace the cream/milk in conventional chowder), onion, celery, carrot, and diced russet potato. I ate a big bowlful (until I was satisfied). Then helped hubby with dishes and went down to do my treadmill time. Typically I do an hour. I got to about 45 minutes and felt really bad - clammy/sweaty, shaky...uh oh was I going super scary high (from the corn and potato) or was I going super crazy low? Stopped exercising and tested. Twice - once on each hand to be sure of my results. Average of the two readings: 60!!!! That's lower than I've been in well, pretty much forever. I admit that I 'slipped' a little there and had a whole wheat tortilla with Nutella (contains milk - hmm now that I think about it, I'll have to look for a vegan version next time I shop, I know right where to look). Then I had a handful of nuts, raisins, craisins, and vegan chocolate chips. Tested two hours later and it was back to a good bedtime/after meal type reading.

BTW got hubby's lab results back yesterday - his LDL and his total cholesterol were much lower - LDL was in the 60s and total was mid-120s (triglycerides were good but HDL was still a little low, mid 30s instead of >40). So, when he goes to the doctor next week for followup, he's going to discuss decreasing his cholesterol meds and see how that goes.

Wow! These BG numbers are really good for having eaten corn, potatoes and other carbs. I appreciate the postings and the personal messages. How often do they begin these Kickstarts? I still have some fears, but think its worth a try. I'm jumping in now as best I can. I still have to cook meat for my husband. I exercise every morning and wonder if I will have higher numbers after dinner. Thanks, Karen

Kickstarts have been in January, April, and September as far as I know - but schedules can always change, I suppose.

If you're just starting, it might take several days to a couple weeks before you see consistently better BG numbers. I was really SHOCKED at those numbers - I expected a little bit high (not skyrocket bad but higher than proper after-dinner range). I was hoping to just stay within the good range, maybe on the high end of good. I did not expect to drop that low - and I also didn't notice feeling like my blood sugar went really high beforehand (I tend to get sleepy and cranky). Next time, I'm going to plan for before meal, 1 hr after meal, and 2 hr after meal testing schedule to see if there is a big jump causing that drastic dive or if this was some sort of fluke or if this really is a viable option as a more regular thing.

One thing that helps if cooking for an omnivore still is to do mix'n'match type meals. For instance, a whole grain pasta with tomato sauce, and then meatballs, parmesan, or whatever on the side and a nice tossed salad to share. He can have the meat/dairy, you can skip it. Then maybe once or twice a week, choose what looks like a really hearty tasty vegan meal to serve for both of you - for instance, a hearty black bean chili - hubby makes a vegan chili with black beans, corn, tomato (both sauce and diced), bell peppers (multi color if you can manage it), onion, spices, and sometimes diced mushroom (portabellas have a really 'meaty' texture). Use the 'not cheese' sauce for making nachos - they're a natural for mix'n'match anyhow and the 'not cheese' sauce is almost identical (in look, taste, texture) to the nacho cheese sauce that most restaurants serve (like the jars of meltable cheese product, KWIM?) We cook up some black beans and roughly chop them into 'crumbles', then add homemade guacamole (mashed avocado with a splash of lime juice - no salt or anything added), salsa, maybe some sliced black olives, and pour the not cheese sauce over the whole lot on top of some baked corn tortilla chips.

One place to look for good 'share with hubby' meals might be the Engine 2 cookbook - if it's food fit for firefighters, that's probably hearty enough for a meat-eating hubby. Wink

My blood sugar level was 87 this morning to my surprise I ate black bean chili last night for dinner which was made up of black beans, brown rice, corn, tomatoes, green pepper and onions.

I am really happy with the vegan diet because I was beginning to think there was nothing out there that could help me get my blood sugar levels under control.

Two hours after dinner yesterday - 110.

This morning, my fasting was 132. About 2hrs or so later it was 159 and just now at 4:30 pm it was 183. I'm on Metformin. My worst problem with the vegan plan is I really don't like beans. But I'm trying to learn to like them. Do we have to eat the exact menus that they line out for us? I am eating oatmeal every morning, and 4 fruits a day. I love veggie soup (with lima beans and barley) and made a pot to eat on this past week. I made split pea soup today. I make a pot to last a week or so. Eating salads too. But except for baked beans and pork n beans, I have a hard time eating beans.

I'm Type 2. I hadn't been testing for a while and started with the Kickstart. My numbers are scaring me. After black beans, corn, and brown rice with salsa I went up to 151. I was hoping all of the fiber would help keep it low. Does it get better with time? Or should I go back to counting carbs? Any suggestions?
