Fiber: do calories count or not?
Posted Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 10:09 PM
Since fiber isn't digested by the body, why are calories for fiber listed on labels? And do those fiber calories "count" toward our daily intake? Thanks

Fiber does not digest, this is true. That is why we do not recommend counting calories. If you eat to your heart and belly's content high-fiber foods, you will lose weight or maintain your ideal weight. You get to live like the healthiest people on the planet - just eat without thinking/counting/portioning AND be healthy.

You have a good point about not worrying about counting calories, for most people. However, I lost 130 pounds over the last couple years, and keeping track of what I eat, calories, fiber, etc., is a big part of the way I maintain my weight. I don't want to risk not doing that--too scary that I might backslide.

Some people are numbers people, documenters, etc. And if that works - GREAT! I wouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken.

I'm sure it's a big factor in keeping my weight stable, too. I'm a big fan of fiber!
