Cold Cereal Suggestion
Posted Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 11:33 PM
I'm wondering if anyone has a favorite cold cereal that fits within the guidelines of 21-day eating. Curious to hear what others are eating.....

Call me crazy, but I love Grape Nuts. Kashi makes a version of Grape Nuts called 7 Whole Grain Nuggets. I love it! I put bananas, raisins, and almond milk on top. Filling, with lots of fiber. Rolled oats I love in the winter. Throw a cup in the microwave for 2 minutes at work. Top with a splash of almond/soy/rice milk, add cinnamon, bananas (or whatever fruit I have), and a dab of pure maple syrup. Yummy!

As a general rule of thumb, I tell clients to choose a cold cereal that has at least 6 grams of fiber per serving and no sugar or cane juice in the ingredients. And of course, vegan.

I love Nature's Path Flax Plus Red Berry Crunch cereal. It is so filling, Omega 3's and 7 grams of fiber per serving and it is sooooo yummy!

That sounds wonderful. I'm getting hungry for some cereal. I will have to look for that cereal at Trader Joes.

Believe it or not, my favorite cold cereal is cold oatmeal! I got this idea from a McDougall video. It's a go-afternoon snack for me. Basically, I just put some rolled oats in a bowl, pour on some almond or oat milk (and/or apple juice sometimes), and just let it sit in the fridge until I am ready for it. When it comes time to eat, I eat it as is, or add some fruit on top...and sometimes a sprinkle of cinnamon. Yummy!

I had a bowl of Trader Joes almond cereal with some soy milk last night as a snack and boy did that do the trick. I also have another brand which has flax seed in it with nuts. I am really enjoying being Vegan. It takes the guess work out of what I should be eating. I hate dieting...absolutely hate counting calories, points, etc. I don't have time!! This is great. Plus, it is healthy. I love this website because it does explain so much about becoming vegan. My husband has been vegan for over two years now and has lost 39 pounds and feels great!! He is very, very strict..right down to what kind of chocolate he can have...93% cocoa and no animal fat. Geesh!

I cannot have gluten. Does anyone know of something I can use instead of couscous? I love it, so it kills me that I cannot have it.

Sure! Brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, and sometimes oats (depending on the factory where it's processed). There are lots of grains that don't have gluten. They are just not very popular in our culture. But there are more and more foods made with gluten-free grains such as pasta, breads, waffles, crackers, etc.

I bought a cereal at Trader Joe's and had to return it because it contained WHEY. Whey is the serum or watery part of milk that is separated from the curd in making cheese. Be sure to check all of your ingredients as Whey is present in a lot of things!
