If you follow it, it will happen. (Just like a field of dreams!) Unless you have some other extenuating health obstacle, this diet is very calorie friendly, so it makes it very easy to burn off more than one consumes. It's amazing how calorie-heavy animal products are, not to mention just plain unhealthy. Good luck Gramma, and enjoy the way you will feel even after the 1st week!

If you stick to this diet 100 percent you will drop the weight you need to drop slowly but permanently. About a pound per week is a healthy weight loss. In our studies, those following the vegan diet lost about a pound per week without exercise, calorie counting, or portion control. Additionally, they kept it off (or lost even more) by keeping a vegan diet even after the study was over. That's because it's easy to stick to this way of eating. The diet is easy because you get to eat as much as you want - all the beans, grains, fruits, and vegetables you can pile on your plate. The "secret" is these foods are so filling (fiber), have so many nutrients, yet have relatively few calories. Plus, to be blunt, fiber does not digest, so those calories are coming right back out. Fiber is in all plant foods. There is zero fiber in animal products (dairy, meat, eggs). Stick to it 100 percent for 3 weeks! You can do anything for 3 weeks!

I GUARANTEE you'll lose weight! I've too long been a couch potato. Without changing anything other than my diet, I lost 30 lbs. in less than 4 mos! After losing about 8 more, I've plateaued out. Decided a couch potato needs to start slowly so I bought Richard Simmons' "Sweatin' To The Oldies" 5-CD set. I'm 57 and can relate to the music! I just started so we'll see what happens. Too intimidated to join a gym. Just move the furniture out of the way and have some fun! Awkward at first until you start to get the moves down, but it's fun and that's what matters. Keep us posted on your progress! I will mention this because I think it's important. Be sure to eat raw veggies as well as cooked. It took me a while to realize that a lot of cooked veggies and not enough raw tended to make me not constipated, but sometimes sluggish. Not a big liquid person, so I worked to increase my water intake. Adding more beans, walnuts, and almonds into my salads and veggie dishes helped. I found a wonderful 4-grain rice mix at Costco, and sometime I add split peas to the mix as they take the same cooking time. While I don't eat a lot of bread, I found a wonderful one at Safeway. It's their "O Organics" Whole Grains, Seeds & Fiber bread. Label looks vegan to me except for "natural flavor". I've sent an e-mail requesting info on that. Good luck to you!

I started a vegan lifestyle on Jan 1 kickstart. Was 185. Today, I weigh 169.5 and am walking into a gym to join. This has been the easiest lifestyle change I have ever made. Life is full of tasty foods, my body feels better and I'm headed home to my normal body weight of 132. Hang in there... You are not alone. Debra

Plantris - That is awesome. Congratulations. I started the vegan lifestyle on February 15, 2009 weighing 223. Today I weighed in at 146.2. Yay. I have 14.2 more pounds until I reach a healthy BMI. I have, however, also been exercising. I love feeling my new muscles. My newest fascination is hula hooping. It is sooo much fun, and my thighs, hips and waist are already showing progress after only a month of regularly doing it.

I definitely think you will lose weight on this. This is the 11th day, and I have lost 4 pounds. This is the best "diet" I have ever been on because I am constantly eating! Good luck to you, but I am sure you will see great results in the way you look and feel.
