Health issues. When I tried this diet before the engery that I obtained but a better digestive system were the results. But I cave when it comes to food not on the diet.

Is there a specific food that makes you cave? Meat? Cheese?
Having good food handy is important for keeping you from feeling deprived.

I feel your pain and struggle. I live with meat eater and for some of the people I know they can not imagine what is wrong with me. I purchased a bracelet (in lue of getting a tatoo on my hand) to remind me that is am a vegan. I got a bumper sticker that I walk by everyday to remind me of my goal. Visual cues are good for me. Even when I failed for the last year I never went back to my worst meat eating days, I ate "mostly vegan" and I felt good I had some impact because when I sid I was going to do a year of being vegan, no one blinked. I still had 2 days that were not perfect (DQ and a slice of cheese got me) but I will not give up on me (or you) this year. We can do it, to the best of our ability we well make this the "year of being vegan".

Yes. I reside with my mother who will not give up meat. If it is in the fridge or pantry and visible that what makes it hard not to give into temptation. I am trying to have a week's worth of meatless meals so I do not give in to whats on the stove in the meat that is in the oven.

This may sound like a strange strategy, but if you're struggling keeping vegan it may help to look more into how the animals are treated. Once you know, you can't unknow. It really changes your perspective!

Start at Vegan Outreach with their online pamphlets, watch Meet Your Meat or Earthlings, and read some of the rescue stories on sanctuary sites.

I'll be back in a sec with some links!

I have been vegan for nearly two years now and I can say that it gets easier. Much, much, much easier. The first three months are the most difficult...persevere these and you will be golden.
My recommendation is meal planning...each week before I go to the grocery store I plan out every single meal (breakfast and lunch are very simple, dinner is more extravagant with one new recipe tried a week) and I buy all the ingredients (plus a few vegan friendly treats). If you're going out to a restaurant, don't leave it until you're in front of the menu...call ahead of time and mention you are vegan, ask what your options are and what the chef/cook can do to accommodate you. That way no one is rolling their eyes at you when you are trying to order...you can just say, "I called earlier, and the person on the phone mentioned..." . Best of luck to you!!

OK, here are the links to the things I mentioned.

Vegan Outreach pamphlet "Why Vegan": You can download the pdf or read the info online here.

Meet Your Meat: This and other films are available free online here.

Earthlings: Trailers and excerpts, or the full video (all the way at the bottom) are available free on the official site here.

Sanctuary rescue stories: These are also very motivating! Farm Sanctuary's are here. Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary's are here.

NOTE: The videos are definitely hard to watch, but I promise they will motivate you to stick with it! If you can't watch them (I have never successfully made it all the way through Earthlings) then just hang on to *that* feeling. These are your "glass walls."

Shanna, I love your statement "what you know you can't unknow". That's a great reminder for those of us who feel compassion for our fellow earthlings who live such sad lives and die horrible deaths.

Last night I was almost tempted by an uneaten grilled cheese sandwich staring at me at a friend's house ...until I thought about the poor little calf who was forced to go without his mother's milk just so we could have cheese! Aaaargh!! (my arteries silently thanked me for not caving in too)

Thanks for the pep talk, everyone, about staying the course. Love the visual cues idea too.

All we are saying is "Give Peas a Chance"

Well searched for and found Meet your meat. What a horrific 12 minutes of video that was. Now when I crave a cheeseburger or a pernil (roast pork) I will turn this video on to turn off my meat cravings. Thank you.

When I first went vegan I allowed myself one meat meal per week. I discovered while wolfing that down that it wasn't about the meat. I was wolfing down all my food. Then I noticed I did not like the feel of meat in my mouth and teeth. Meat eating is also boring flavor-wise.

I've been struggling too, and have been more "off" the diet than "on." I'm an adult child living at home with the parents. Mom is cool with the vegan diet and would like to make the change too, but dad is against, he says we can do what we want but he won't follow, then he makes it near impossible for us. Compounding the problem is my older brother who has moved back in after a messy divorce, he eats meat 3-4 times a day, and LOTS of it. Sometimes I can't get near the kitchen to make anything for myself. My finances at this time won't allow me to move out.

I know what you mean. If I come home from work and find that there is roasted chicken or other meat already prepared that is when I cave in. I going to the store and prepare a couple of day's worth of meals so I dont cave in.

My husband isn't vegan or vegetarian for that matter. He has cut out cheese. He usually cooks meat when I'm gone. Otherwise he complains (just like he did before) about everything I cook! He does like PCRM's Vegetarian Mixed-Bean Chilli Express, though.

It would be harder if one of his sons lived here. It would feel like two against one. But I still wouldn't eat the meat. I don't like it!

As other people mentioned visual cues really help me- I had always wanted to be a veg but never became one until I forced myself to read and/or watch in entirety the horrific treatment of animals - when I did I went cold tofu off meat. When I am tempted the visual pops up and I am over it. Also having substitutes available are very helpful, if you have something that tastes very similar to whatever it is hard for you to resist then its not so hard anymore- soon you won't even need those substitutes either. Quorn products are almost identical tasting(although they do have dried egg whites in them) to chicken, turkey etc....have them in the freezer for when you think you can't hold out. Maybe also you can tell yourself meat products are the first thing to go and then after you have conquered that move on to getting dairy out of your diet for good etc.. When someone says something to me oh doesn't this look good etc..I usually retort no Carcass for me thanks

I've been vegetarian - not eating any meat - for a year, so I'm over the meat cravings. In fact, I love watching cooking shows and when they play with meat, I can't watch any more - it makes me sick.

I've never been much of a cheese lover either, so that hasn't been hard to give up.

However, I LOVE breakfast food, so giving up omelettes and, my favorite, Eggs Benedict, has been VERY difficult. Whenever I'm tempted, I think about what an egg actually is and it usually grosses me out enough that I don't give in to temptation. At least, I haven't yet.

And, I love butter on good bread, but I've been using Earth Balance and it's a great substitute.

My carnivore husband has been very supportive and has even talked me out of giving in to temptation, so I'm blessed in that area.
