Starting a personal revolution
Posted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 9:25 AM

This year has been a personal revolution for me. I have given up caffeine, aspartame, dairy, eggs and meat and am doing well. Now, it is time to move to the most difficult part.

I need to exercise. I have never really done it before. I work at a community college and have signed up for a fitness class on M W from 12-1. I am writing this so I become accountable.

I also need to cut down on drinking red wine. It may be organic red wine with no sulfites added, but still. It can't be too healthy when consumed in excess.

This forum has been helpful and again, I am writing this to become accountable and responsible for my actions. Thanks for reading.

It always bothered me to be eating animals and animal products. Now, it is nice to be able to look myself in the mirror and know that although a small action, I am not contributing to the absolute horror of the meat and dairy industry. Movies like Food Inc. and books like We Eat Animals have taught me that I cannot and will not support something so horrible.

Good luck on your revolution, particularly the exercise part. I have never really enjoyed exercise either. I badly broke my arm late October (actually elbow, humerus and shoulder) and have been using that as an excuse not to walk (didn't break my leg!)

My husband and I recently made a decison not to drink more than two small glasses of wine when we go out for dinner(actually because of the risk of DUI...neither of us could afford to loose our licenses.) I wonder if that sort of a contract (between you and you) would work for red wine consumption at home?

I truly appreciate your strategy. Committing to the Kickstart program is the most empowering thing I've ever done in 45 years on this planet. But my stumbling blocks to a more healthy lifestyle are definitely exercise and wine. Thanks for letting us all know that we aren't alone in our struggles to lead a healthier and more responsible life. Very Happy

It was hard to say it "out loud" but those two things are the final two things that must be done to really feel that I have turned a corner. Thanks for your support and best wishes to you!

Tess,

Your blog is charming! And applause applause for all the changes you have made. Commendable!

What a smart cookie you are for signing up for a fitness class. This may be just the thing you need to get into some new habits of activity. Having a place to go and a commitment to a session like that may get you out the door more consistently than otherwise.

With diligence, you will become addicted - in a GOOD way - to the joy of feeling fit and energetic that can come only with a stronger, more fit body. Enjoy the process of each session, how it makes you feel (even if you are tired after, it will make everything else work better!) - the energy, the physical confidence that only grows.

THIS is how you build a new habit of activity levels - just like you made changes with diet! Then you'll be able to branch out on your own, find additional ways to be an active person, and enjoy the energy and body shaping and well-being that come with it.

Cheers and onward!

Thank you Lani for the encouragement!

I have also been researching the link between gluten and depression and have decided to try gluten and wheat elimination to see if there is an improvement. I figure it can't hurt to give one more thing up.

I am on a roll!
