Juicing
Posted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 9:40 AM
I know that juicing has so many benefits, and years ago, when juicers seemed to be really popular, I had one. I called it the fruit fly condo. If I didn't wash all the parts every day it got pretty gross. It also gets expensive when you're liquifying so much fruit and produce! Finally, I guess I felt I'd rather chew my food than drink it. I think I want to reconsider juicing, but my old juicer has gone the way of the bread machine and the food processor. Is it worth buying a new one? Are their reasonably priced juicers that don't have 12 parts to be cleaned and that do the job well?

I do juice but not too often because you are right about the fruit flies unkess you are very vigilant. I juice when I know I need more nutrients. I also have a health food store that will do it when I do not want to clean. If you have a blender I have added spinach to smoothies, no juicing required, any veg can be added and pureed to get even more nutrients and fiber.

I used to juice, but I think I get more of my money's worth with a VitaMix. It's the easiest way to get all of my greens.

I got one for my birthday a couple months ago. It's a Breville Juice Fountain. I love it, and it's pretty easy to clean--3 large parts not incl the putcher and pulp basket-- and only the centrifiugal basket has to be brushed (brush is included). I either compost the pulp or make dehydrated crackers with it if I'm feeling industrious. And I don't juice everyday or as a way to avoid eating fruits and veggies. Obviously juicing removes the fiber. So I think of it as a bonus. They do provide a good energy boost-- but if you go all or mostly fruit you can also rack up calories pretty quick. That's why carrots, celery, cucumbers and greens are usually my focus, with either an apple or an orange for a little sweetness. All that said, if you are going to invest in a new powertool for your kitchen, a VitaMix or other high-powered blender is more versatile and the fiber stays in your smoothies and juice drinks and soups, unless you strain it out. Hope that info helps!

I totally agree with the Vita-Mix or Blendtec being probably the most versatile machines. With a nut-milk bag or layers of cheesecloth you can even make juice with them. That being said, they are expensive. Even the Breville can be a bit much, depending on your budget. I actually got a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth at Wal-Mart for like $50 or something. It's not fancy or extremely powerful, but it does well enough if you don't have the money to spend for the others. I've juiced everything from carrots and beets to spinach and romaine.

Thanks Recipeguy and everyone, sounds like VitaMix is the way to go. For now, though, it will have to stay on my wish list, as cost is a factor. No problem, I'm crunching and munching my way to a healthier new year!

you can do most things in a less expensive blender--maybe not the "hot soups" and "frozen treats" like the vitamix videos. but smoothies and juices, for sure. just add more liquid.

I love my Vita Mix. I used other blenders, kept putting it off, didn't want to spend the money. Bottom line, I LOVE MY VITA MIX! It does everthing I want it to do. It's so easy my husband even makes his own smoothies and he is normally quite challenged in the kitchen.
