sheer willpower got me through last night
Posted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 10:10 AM

10 days in and I'm having terrible meat cravings. I don't enjoy fake meat or lots of spices so I've been sticking to beans and green veggies with lots of nuts, seeds and fresh fruit. I live with the most militant carnivore on the planet and he cooks meat every night. Last night I wanted a piece of his steak so bad I had to go to the bathroom and have a good cry. I didn't give in and I was SO PROUD of myself! This is the most serious commitment that I've ever made to myself. I want to be successful more than even I knew. Does anyone have any strategies for dealing with cravings?

That's amazing. And I'm sorry your militant carnivore is not more understanding or supportive. Probably he is feeling threatened by your changing. That's OK.

It will get easier. People are also offering strategies in the VEGAN ME TO BE thread.

Hang in there! It's so worth it. Smile

You are in the throws of dealing with your cravings - getting out the problem food for 21 days. It's not easy. But after a few weeks, it should get a lot easier. Making sure you are not hungry is also key. Eat lots of your beans, grains, fruits, and vegetables.

When you see how your health improves, that may also out-weigh cravings. Do you want it so badly that it's worth sacrificing your health? Hopefully, your militant carnivore friend will see the benefits in your life and want them for himself. But at minimum, he'll want to better support your well-being.

Phyllis, good move to come in here and engender support. Changes like this can seem overwhelming in unexpected ways.

Today is a new day and all the best as you move forward into it! Here's a thread that might help as well, when it comes to Day 10 motivation!

Phyllis, I live about 40 minutes from Austin, so I can relate to being in an area that does not support this lifestyle. During the last kick-start, my husband decided to forego animal products and attempt veganism. He said to tell you that he also had serious cravings around day 10. He said that it helped to stock up on a food that he really likes (ex: frozen grapes) and keep them around to eat when the meat or cheese cravings hit. That way you don't feel so deprived. As for spices, there are so many different spices and many are acquired tastes. You may want to experiment with a few of the milder ones. My husband currently eats Vegan 95% of the time. He eats meat products rarely and then usually only when we are guests at someone's home. Afterwards, he usually states how bad it made him feel. Hope it helps to know that others have gone through this, too, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Stick in there. You are doing good!!!

My reply was getting long so I decided to break it up. My craving was sausage. I found an excellent recipe that is so easy to make (by Isa Chandra Moskowitz)...it sounds horrible...but, tastes so good. This may change your opinion of "fake" meat. It sounds complicated, but once you stock up on the ingredients, is fast and easy.

1/2 cup canned pinto beans - rinsed
1 cup vegetable broth
1 TBSP olive oil
2 TBSP soy sauce
2 TBPS tomato paste
2 tsp lemon zest
2 cloves minced garlic
1 1/4 cup vital wheat gluten
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
2 tsp smoked chipotle powder or smoked paprika
1 TBSP dried rubbed sage
1 tsp dried oregano

I also add pepper, cumin, & mustard seeds. You can add vegan BBQ sauce instead of tomato paste if you want & a little salt....depending on your taste. Divide into 4 or 5 sections. Roll into sausage shape and roll in foil. Twist the ends of the foil. Steam the sausages for 40 minutes. I like to refrigerate mine for a day, but you can eat them right away. I think the flavor improves with time. When we serve aour non-vegan friends, we slice the sausages and brown the edges in a frying pan. You can use a little olive oil if you want. Serve with vegan BBQ sauce, mashed potatoes, green beans and mmmmm good! Carnivore guests rave! A great way to bridge the gap. I wish I could private message you, I would bring some over!

My strategies for conquering cravings:

1) Eat more. Really. Eat a LOT so that you feel totally satisfied. If you're full, and you ate meat and gravy and mayo and chips, you've eaten way too much for your system. If you're full and you ate whole grains, veggies, and other starches, you're just full, and it'll pass, but it will also make it less likely that you'll be starving for something you have chosen not to eat.

2) Vegan treats. I keep treats around the house so that I have something decadent (for me) when I'm feeling deprived. Make a list of a handful of things you LOVE that you can turn to when you're feeling sad about something you are craving.

3) Remind myself that this is something I'm CHOOSING. No one's making me eat vegan. I can choose to eat meat at any moment, but I choose NOT to, and that gives ME all the power, not the other people in my life.

Phyllis, whenever I need inspiration, I reread (or just think about) some of the descriptions of factory farming and slaughterhouse practices in the book "Skinny Bitch." That was the book that started me and my whole family (militant carnivore husband included) on a vegetarian lifestyle about a year ago, and now vegan for me. If you are an animal lover, you won't ever look at meat the same way again!

Go to the Peta website or do a search engine and watch "Meet your meat" for incentive. It sure helped me!!!

I agree with Serene, don't let yourself get hungry. Fill up on the "good stuff" and keep your focus on the end result - good health and high energy. When I'm hungry I want ANYTHING!! And I want it now and lots of it! Avoid that as best you can !

This goes against conventional advice, but it is working for me. I kept a container of what I was addicted to and was going to miss the most - yogurt - in my fridge. Instead of making me want it, it helped me to not want it. Feeling it was banned and removing it completely from my house made me crave it. I know it's there if I need it, and so I don't. In fact, I forgot about it till I read your email. And I was eating it twice a day for about 20 years and it was my favorite comfort food.

I know this may not work for everyone, but I found it worked for me, so I thought I'd pass it along. I might feel differently if I had a lot of yogurts in the fridge instead of just one. I have heard of people who quit smoking and feel better knowing they have an "emergency cigarette" in their purse (that they never end up using). Kind of feels like that.

So true. My mother carried an unopened pack of cigarettes with her for years. The pack wore out but she never smoked one.

When I first gave up meat I found that a combination of beans and brown rice really helped satisfy my meat cravings.

Another thing that helped is finding fun, interesting and yummy vegetarian recipes. If you're eating great tasting and fun things, then you don't miss the meat so much. Do a lot of research - Whole Foods has great recipes on its website and there are other websites that have great recipes too. Buy some good cookbooks or check them out from your library.
