Choosing fruits and Veggies in season
Posted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 11:01 AM

I appreciate all the effort going into the creation of a menu. I respectfully ask if the ingredients could be more seasonal friendly. I am aware some live in areas where tomatoes are fresh, however, in the Northeast it is not an ideal fruit to choose. Parsnips, root vegetables, stored apples are more appropriate for my menu.

I have to admit I laughed to myself when I saw the tomato salad. Winter tomatoes have no flavor. Luckily I have so many leftovers and other recipes I want to try, it was a non-issue to have something else. I miss tomatoes more than any other fruit/veggie in the winter. Although berries come in a close second--luckily I picked 40 lbs worth this summer (Pacific Northwest) and froze quite a few.

I agree! Tomato salad on a January menu in the northern hemisphere?

Yeah, I didn't make the tomato salad either but will definitely try it this summer. Smile We only eat the tomatoes we grow, so really only from July through mid-October around here. The ones from the store aren't good at all, usually.

People from all over the world are participating in the kickstart. I noticed some from Australia where it is Summer. I personally can't grown tomatoes in the Summer because of the heat and usual drought. I grow tomatoes in the Fall and Spring (and occasionally Winter, though not this year). I currently have four wonderful raised-bed gardens with Kale, Broccoli, & other greens. I've had to cover them the past three nights, but they have mostly survived. My advice is to use the recipes that work for you and know that the recipes you don't or can't use are being used by others. Very Happy
