Veggie BBQ Burger at a Cow Town festival
Posted Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 9:48 PM

I help our Garden Club raise money for scholarships at the town festival selling BBQ Brisket sandwiches. We aways sell out usually around 1000 sandwiches. This year the Garden Club is allowing me to make and sell Veggie BBQ burgers for their fundraiser to sell along side of the Brisket sandwiches. This is risky, I think there are 4 vegetarians in the County. And it could very well Flop. (I'm taking advantage of my recent heart attack pity to get this fat free healthy option started.)

I'm using a recipe from the "Engine Two Diet Book". I modified Rip Esselstyn's "New York Times Burger" by adding smoked paprika, vegan BBQ sauce and red pepper flakes to the recipe. I plan on making 24 the night before and serving them warm on a bun with BBQ sauce. The condiments will be pickles and onions.

Wish me Luck!!!!

(The festival is held down the street from the cattle auction barn)

Thanks Y'all. The Brisket sandwiches sell for $3.50 ea. What price should I put on the Veggie BBQ burgers?

More - to indicate a superior healthy sandwich?

Less - to indicate a introductory bargin and to get people to try something new?

The same - ???

Any nifty sayings to put on the advertising booth poster?
(This is a garden club and these will be vegetable burgers.)

It depends. How low can you go and still make a profit?

I'm eager to hear how everyone likes the veggie burgers!

I'll be donating the homemade veggie burgers, so all proceeds will go to the fundraiser.

Don!
I am in Cowtown with you! When is this? I'll come buy one. Or two, or five... Smile Smile Sounds mighty fine.

I say charge $2.50 or $3.00.
You may lose money, but as you said, it's a donation, anyway, and you may lure some people in with the low price.

I'm not much good at sayings, though.

Often times at the bottom of movie credits you see the line "No animals were harmed in the production of this movie." You could call it a Cow-less burger and say "No animals were harmed in the production of this burger."

Oh, I with you lots of luck!! Do you ship to PA?

Molyhorn, sorry these burgers will not be sold in THE TEXAS COW TOWN which every one knows is Fort Worth TX but will be sold in a very small town east of Austin, April 30th. I know KickStart will be over, but the forum will still be open and I will post the results. (Can pictures be posted here?)

Wild4stars, everyone out here is in cattle production, knows someone closely who is, or benefits from it. This will be the first time ever that there is a vegerterian (vegan) option. I'm proceeding with caution.

Veggies4me, Sorry, we WILL be sold out by noon. (hope)

Best of luck Dontx!

You could name the burger after your Garden club,
to put the spin on the buy fresh, buy local theme.

Featuring:
The (name of garden club) Texas BBQ Veggie Burger! Great with a side of
kale chips...

As promised I am reporting back on the sale of the vegan burgers sold at the BBQ sandwich booth in our little cattle county town. We made 22 and sold 16. This was a slow year and we only sold about 400 BBQ sandwiches. The BBQ sandwiches sold for $4.00 and our vegan burgers sold for $3.00. We were the only non-meat option available of the festival. We noticed none of the people who ordered the garden burger were overweight. Two even came back for the recipe. We are happy that 16 people who did not want to eat meat had a choice.

Great job Don!! just wish we could post pics on this site! would have loved to see the booth & burgers & of course you and wife...

Here is a thought... maybe those people who would normally eat the veggie burger, ate before they came.. as you know.. we go places with a plan a head of time...

Now you just have to have a contest of the best veggie buger.. no meat patties at all...that is a dream come true huh??? a vegan contest..!! lol..

One thing that I found interesting is that all the vegan burger customers were thin women. Why is that?????

There is a Chocolate Festival in the fall in our small town in which the Dairy Industry sets up a cow booth to show all the goodness in milk. The wheels are spinning for a non-dairy chocolate "rebuttal" booth.

Maybe we could get Shira Lane down here!!!
