Kidney Stones
Posted Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10:22 PM

I've been vegan since 8/09. I signed up for my first 21 Day Vegan Kickstart 9/09 (I think.) Occasionally I may have eaten something that wasn't vegan in error, but never intentional.

Now I've got kidney stones. How on earth did I ever get these things? Possible that I had them before I started but don't know. No one in my family has ever had them.

Of course my co-workers all say I got the kidney stones because I don't eat enough protein. I think I get plenty of protein! I think higher protein can cause kidney stones anyway.

Anyone with kidney stone experience?

Oh yes, I've had kidney stones! No fun!! Are you trying to pass them or do you just have them? I've heard they can be analyzed so you can see what the build up is from. I didn't have them analyzed. I doubt it's from lack of protein though. I had them years ago when I ate plenty of everything. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in.

Trying to pass them but no luck so far. Work days are harder as I can't take any pain meds except tylenol or motrin at work. At least on my off times I can take some stronger stuff.

Waiting for my appointment for the shock wave lithotripsy.

I started eating a plant based diet in the fall of 2009. Although my husband did not, this was the way I cooked for both of us at home. So, even though he was eating meat & dairy on the outside, his consumption of veggies has gone way up.

He started feeling better & lost weight, then in January of this year, he went to the emergency room in severe pain and we learned that he had developed a kidney stone. I know it's discouraging!

Not sure what type your stone is, but his was oxalate/calcium. I cut high oxalate foods like spinach, beets, celery, parsley, soy & black tea (lots of info about which foods online & from your doctor) out of his diet. To help dissolve the stones, I looked at natural remedies from Dr. Weil (see link below). I juice a lemon and enough apples - one or two - to make it drinkable in the juicer for him at first daily and now a few times a week.

Chamomile tea is a remedy my husband knew of growing up in Mexico, so he drinks that often as well. His pain went away within a day, and he never noticed the stone pass. Please note that his doctor says that it is not possible to dissolve a stone, but he is fine now & no more stones have developed.

Sorry to hear about the kidney stones. But I don't think it is the vegan diet. Kidney stones are definitely more common in meat eaters. Here are some other nutritional considerations to review: http://www.nutritionmd.org/consumers/renal/kidneystones_nutrition.html

Thank you Catbear. I have been eating alot of beets and spinach over the last 1.5 yrs, along with herb tea. Time to make some changes.

Yes, us too! Just wanted to add that herbal tea is fine, it's just regular black tea (like for iced tea) that has oxalate. Good luck!
