Where can I find Quinoa?
Posted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 3:19 PM
There is no Quinoa in Rockford Il. I have to go 90 miles to Chicago to get it. Is there a good place to order it on-line? Help!

I have found it at all our grocery stores. Look in the health and whole food section or the bulk section.

Bet ya a bag a quinoa this place in your town has it: http://www.choicesnaturalmarket.com/ Give 'em a call. If they don't, I'll send you some myself. But you can probably find it at any of the online vegan stores like http://www.veganstore.com or http://www.veganessentials.com, or even Amazon's groceries section. Quinoa is one of my favorite things. (Do rinse it though.) Enjoy!

Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukie Oregon has a wonderful assortment of all whole grains and stock both white and red quinoa. They also sell a huge variety of dried beans and cookbooks. They have a great mail order catalog and a website. Good luck.

Inca red quinoa can be found on amazon and requires no rinsing. If you rinse regular quinoa you can use the rinse water as a laundry soap/booster.

Marcia, I live in Beloit and got it at Woodman's. Try Woodman's Rockford. I got the Bob's Red Mill brand.

I used to live in Madison, WI and our Woodmans there had it almost 10 years ago. So, if you have a Woodmans, I'm sure they have it. Here, all of our grocery stores have it - some have it in the natural foods section and some have it in the rice aisle.

Cassaba, I did go to Woodman's, but didn't see it. Is it in the baking aisle?

No, it's in the natural foods aisle I think. Either that, or go to the rice aisle. Ask someone who works there, maybe they can help.

Saponin. It's the same substance found in soap nuts. Natural soap. I prefer the red inca cuz there is no rinsing and it is very simple to cook as well as having a slightly nutty taste. Its a good substitute for bulgur in a tabouli recipe if you are sensitive to gluten

Cool, thanks, goobygirl. I make my own laundry detergent, and I'm always trying to figure out ways to use waste matter more wisely.

If you can't find it in your local grocery store perhaps speak to the store manager and ask if s/he will bring it in for you. If you want it chances are others might too.

I am thinking about going thru a CSA this year. The Winnebago county extension had a presentation on local food, so they had all the food farmers there to ask them question. Very interesting. I didn't know quinoa was so plentiful. I've never heard of it before. I very seldom go down the health aisle at the grocery store. This kickstart has been a real education.

Noticed an ad in my vegetarian times mag that shows bob's red mill organic quinoa has already been rinsed and air dried to remove saponins. Lots of red mill products can be found in regular grocery stores now. www.bobsredmill.com
