afraid to eat too much
Posted Monday, March 1, 2010 at 8:31 AM
Hello I have signed up for this kickstart program and now I'm worried about eating all that's on the program. I have been watching calories for so long it's hard to let it go. I am worried I will put weight back on. Has anyone been doing this program for awhile and have lost weight? I just don't want to ruin what I've already done. Thanks for any input. B

I've lost 20 lbs since Dec 27! I have 30-40 to go though so have a lot to lose and know it will slow down. Hoping to continue w/5 lb weight loss per month. I started the kickstart Jan. 1 and have stayed with it. I don't/can't eat everything on the menu--it's a lot of food! I do eat until I'm satisfied though, and rarely feel hungry. I think that's the key for me. It still feels like I eat a lot of food, and it's more than I used to eat but it's the right kind of food and is certainly working well for me. I also exercise every day--usually for 60 min. It is hard to let go of the calorie counting, but try this for 21 days and see what happens. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

I've maintained 20 pounds lost since early last summer. I eat a lot of food. I'm use to eating vegan so mostly I keep an eye on the fats; especially saturated fats. I haven't decided if I want to lose more weight or not. If I do, I know I can do so without much effort...and still eat a lot of food. I'm in my 50's. Aside from eating low-fat vegan losing weight was a slow venture. I got rid of my "middle-aged spread." As you go along you will find the food you eat tastes better. You are not overwhelming your pallet with greasy so-called food. Jean

Hi, Has the diet you have been following been a vegan diet? If not, the breakdown of food will be different. Watching calories will not be an issue for the most part on this plan unless you are indugling in sugar and breads as a mainstay. I congratulate you on your loss so far. I have another 30 to lose and I lose very slowly. Part of my issue is getting enough food.

One idea I got from AARP's "Blue Zones" project (and Dan Buettner's book, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who'e Lived the Longest) comes from Okinawa--the idea being to eat until you're 80% full. Or in more user-friendly terms, don't eat until you're satisfied, but rather eat until you're no longer hungry. In the U.S. in particular, we tend to eat whatever is in front of us, so if one is worried about eating too much, maybe the trick is to serve yourself smaller portions, then if you're still hungry, have more. On the other hand, maybe it would be better to eat a lot of good foods at meals so you won't be tempted to nibble later. I really have to watch this! Both eliminating the urge to nibble AND having something decent readily at hand if the urge gets too much. It's not hard to nibble hundreds of calories, even from vegan foods, if one doesn't plan ahead! (Blue Zones, incidentally, are places where there are a lot of 100-yrs-plus people who are very healthy. A big part of it seems to be diet and exercise. Not necessarily vegetarian/vegan, but very much plant-based foods--not much in the way of animal products.)

Actually, one of the things that I like about this way of eating is that you don't have to starve! So long as you eat all the healthy foods...you can eat to satisfaction, regain your health and lose weight! I've tried tons of "diets" over the last 30 years, and I can tell you I starved myself fat! It's a hard way to live. I remember feeling famished most days; sometimes I wouldn't eat until dinner! Now that I can actually EAT, my mood is better, my energy is higher...and I am losing weight (slowly, as I still have to take a lot of insulin). But for the first time in a year the scale is going down AND I feel pleasantly satisfied all day. Beans, grains and starchy veggies are all very filling...so if they are the star in your eating plan...you'll get full before you take in too many calories. At least that's what I've found. It's very hard to over-eat plain potatoes! It can be very liberating to stop counting calories, points, carbs, etc. Just give it a try!

B blonde, You are right on target with your words and I am certain that others are going to benefit from you bringing this into the conversation. For those used to weighing, measuring, counting, and do "serving sizes" in the effort to control calories to get a grip on weight, it is a challenge to break that habit AND it can be scary! Using your appetite as your guide can seem like a frightening thought and experience. But time and experience - and results - will build your confidence. As one coming from a long and colorful diet history, I speak from experience. Keep coming in for support and encouragement and learn from how others are putting all of this together. It's a wonderful way to live! Lani

Thanks everyone for your comments and support. I did it today! I'm feeling good and haven't added up a single calorie. I made a huge pot of beans today, half for chili and the over half plain. I made some great salsa and will make wild brown rice tomorrow. The wraps I made today where so good. Thanks again.....your all supper! B

I find that as long as you avoid sugary foods, flour and nuts, you can't really gorge on anything vegan before getting really, really full

I agree that it is so hard to reprogram. I went from dieting for years and barely exceeding 1200 calories.. and still not losing weight, to going vegetarian, and now vegan, and losing 20 pounds! And I feel like I am always eating! I love it. And my body loves it. I hope you can keep it up. It just takes some reprogramming.

I really look at this as the way I plan to eat for the rest of my life. I don't WANT to count and weigh and log every morsel I eat from now til forever. When I stay away from the processed foods I lose weight, when I start letting them back in, I don't. Really couldn't get any easier than that. Fresh fruits, veggies, greens and whole grains. Eat to Live, not live to eat.

Something that is helpful to me is using a small plate so it looks fuller and eating the lower-calorie foods (greens and other non-starchy veggies) first. Then when I focus on the high-calorie foods, I'm not ravenous and I can savor them slowly and "listen" to my hunger level to know when to stop. I also brush my teeth right after dinner to avoid the late-night pantry-raids.

I can relate to being afraid to eat. Seems like anytime I start a new eating program and it says to eat till full, I think I eat too much food. Feel guilty if I am hungry, usually not long after I ate. Maybe I dont eat enough food when I do eat. Does this happen to anyone else. Not really getting satisfied at a meal?

I think one of the things I like about going vegan is the lack of decisions I have to make. I was tired of spending so much time thinking about when, and what and how much I'm going to eat. Being vegan I can eat anything I want, whenever I want as long as it doesn't come from an animal. If I'm hungry and I want to eat a huge bowl of vegetables, I CAN! I have built salads big enough to feed a family and eaten every bite myself. If I'm hungry, I eat, if I'm not, I don't. For me it just seems so easy and intuitively it just feels right. There have been questions on some of the threads about counting calories or carbs. I'm 58 years old, I don't want to spend the rest of my life counting and logging every morsel I put into my mouth. I'M TIRED AND I'M NOT GOING TO DO IT ANYMORE. I listen to my body, eat no animal products, watch my fats. And sometimes I eat too much broccoli!! Or Romaine, or brussel sprouts, or . . . . . . .

Great info. I too am loving eating what I want when I want, and not feeling guilty about it! I know I am probably eating more fat than I should and need to work on that. Instead of a big bowl of ice cream I am now snacking on pita chips, nuts, etc. Obviously healthier, but not ideal yet.

So, we are allowed added fats? Olive oil, coconut oil, and nuts? I am trying to stay way low on the fat count here.

I think we are strongly encouraged to avoid added fats, but a few of the recipes (Southern Beans & Greens, for example) have very small amounts of added fats. I did this in January and still haven't eliminated the fats, but I have definitely come a long way on reducing them. I'm pretty sure that some, if not all, of the doctors associated with PCRM advocate diets very low in fat (~10% of total calories).

I don't think you should eliminate the nuts. Make sure you are eating raw nuts and keep it to an ounce a day. Raw nuts are actually good for you, even though they are pretty fattening.
