Is coffee allowed?
Posted Monday, March 1, 2010 at 10:06 AM
Hi there. I've been a vegetarian since last year but recently started flirting with veganism. I love it! My only "fix" is coffee!! A nice soy latte or cappuccino (made with soy) in the morning is divine. However, I am willing to give it up...any natural suggestions for headaches? (Unless of course a coffee a day is ok)

Well, I don't know if caffeine is an allowable part of the "Plan", so I hope a moderator will address that! As far as it being an acceptable vegan option, as long as you are not going to, say, a Starbucks, and ordering a Caramel Macchiato (my old fave) - they use all sorts of flavourings and questionable ingredients. If you get a coffee with a little raw sugar and soy milk and have them (or make your own) it is perfectly vegan!

As you start eating healthier you may lose your interest in coffee. I found that I was warming it up and dumping it out more than I was drinking it. I finally just quit making it. Now, I have coffee maybe once a month. The every day habit is history and I never missed it.

I have read in Alicia's book the Kind Diet and in Skinny B!tch that coffee isn't great for you (dehydrating etc). Coffee is my vice and I drink a cup every morning and maybe in the afternoon once a week. I have decided to pack my coffee maker away and drink only herbal teas. I have found that adding a little soy milk to a chai tea makes a wonderful replacement. This is day 2 of no coffee for me and the headaches are the biggest issue, but I am sure they will be gone soon. Best of luck!

Aloha! I wanted to suggest trying Teeccino. A very wise woman recommended it to me last month when I decided to give up coffee forever (the acid in coffee was killing my stomach and the caffeine was truly doing a number on me). I've never been successful at giving up coffee until now. I bought the original 75% organic Teeccino and loved it. I've since bought a few of the other flavors and they so far have all be really great. No caffeine and no acid. True winner.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions - they're great! Day 1 with no coffee - I wasn't a really big coffee drinker but I really loved that first one in the morning... I had 2 cups of green tea. the headache situation is not as bad as I thought it would be (then again, it's still early), I am feeling a little sluggish and sleepy however. Oh, well!! Here's to getting healthy!! I love chai soy lattes!! I didn't even think of that! That would be a good alternative for a little while... at least the cappuccino machine can still be used for the "schuma"!!

I try to avoid caffeine because it is one of the dietary intakes that inhibits the body's absorption of calcium and iron. I successfully completed the January Kickstart and learned this and a whole lot more from the immensely helpful posts on this forum. People are so generous with their wealth of knowledge and experience. Pointers to delicious recipes is another reason for staying tuned to the forum. Another couple of useful 'supports' are the two books 'Living Vegan for Dummies' and 'Being Vegetarian for Dummies'. They contain a huge amount of helpful information, and when you're doing this by yourself, believe me they feel like real friends!
