You can look these up online. Kashi's website lists ingredients. I don't know the other product. If there's a specific ingredient you are unsure about, post the list and someone may be able to help you.

OK, I googled it. roductDisplay">https://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10052&productId=655290&catalogId=1&krypto=QJrbAudPd0vzXUGByeatog%3D%3D&ddkey=http roductDisplay That looks vegan to me, but it also doesn't look like a great choice, with enriched flour and preservatives, etc. The fiber is low--this plan recommends whole grain breads with about 4 grams of fiber per serving. My personal rule is something with a label like that (chemical names, sweeteners, and "enriched" anything) doesn't go in my basket. I can't remember the name of mine, but I get it at Whole Foods and it's just 100% whole wheat without sugar or preservatives. I keep it in the freezer and it lasts longer. It's a clear bag with brown writing on it. Thomas' Sahara brand is vegan but it has high fructose corn syrup and preservatives as well. All of the Ezekiel Bread for Life products are vegan and are pretty easy to find in the freezer section. Kashi Go Lean Crunch is not vegan because it has honey. (That's not an issue for everyone, but I don't eat it.) It also has soy-protein isolate, which I also avoid. Here are the ingredients: http://kashi.com/products/golean_crunch (click button for nutritional information) Hope that helps. I know it seems overwhelming at first, but you'll find things you like and shopping will become second nature after a while. Good luck.

Ugh, part of that link turns into a smiley. I don't know how to turn that off. Type a : and a P there instead when your browser opens.

Don't worry, you're doing great! It's ok to start slow. Just focus on the "biggies:" no meat, no eggs, no dairy. Don't worry about honey or by-products for now. Once you get the hang of this you'll find it easier to keep track of other things. The most important thing right now is to make this transition at a level that is manageable for you.

well, those are just recommendations, if you're doing this for health reasons. i was just offering my opinion on the foods you asked about, since you asked! it will do you a lot of good to give up meat and dairy, even if you don't worry about other things right now. those are big steps in the right direction. it's not hard to avoid "fake" foods once you learn what to look for. that's one of the most eye-opening things about becoming vegan. you really start to notice what the heck you're putting in (and on) your body. i'm so thankful for that new thoughtfulness! so...it's a process. no need to feel like you have to be perfect. we're all learning.

I don't want to fail on my first day because the "rules" are so unclear!!! how about calorie counting? Just work with what you are comfortable with. For my DH's first vegan month, he was concerned about kicking meat and dairy, and less about non-whole grains and lower fat. It depends how far down the road you want to go. There is no failure, just improvements to be tweaked if desired for additional benefits. And you really don't have to worry about calorie counting...really! Just focus on fiber-filled whole natural foods...and the calories take care of themselves. Eat when you are hungry...eat to satisfaction of the good...and you just can't go wrong. HTH!

I'm confused I agree with the others who suggested that you start with avoiding meat, dairy, eggs and worry about the by-products and hidden stuff later. One thing I find helpful is to skim through ingredient lists very quickly for obvious keywords (beef, chicken, lard, egg, milk, cheese, etc.) and then check below that where it has the bold print allergen list for "Contains: Milk". I often miss the weird byproducts when I skim through, but that allergen statement helps me catch it. I find that it takes me a long time to grocery shop if I check out lots of unfamiliar products, but I also decide a lot of things sound gross after I read their crazy ingredient list. I don't even bother reading the really long ones anymore - they're almost never healthy anyways.
