Egg Whites
Posted Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 10:23 PM
I have recently noticed that some "Morning Star" products have egg whites listed in the ingrediants. What are the Vegan thoughts on this? Also, some of those same products contain non-fat dry milk.

I would stay away from the animal protein. There are vegan options.

Thank you for your reply. So I guess no egg whites. Do you eat any of the Morning Star Products?

You just have to ALWAYS read ingredients. Boca products, some are vegan, some are NOT. Same with Morning Star and any other processed product. Also look for "whey" which is in many of the products and is a dairy product.

I was very disappointed to see egg whites on the list of ingredients for the Morning Star Farms "sausage" patties. I absolutely adore those. Anyone have a vegan recipe? I'm also finding a very hard time locating an egg replacer in my grocery stores that doesn't contain eggs. Even at Trader Joe's I can't find this.

You can find Ener-G Egg Replacer at Whole Foods or another Natural Food Store. It really works well for baking. Now, if you are doing an traditionally egg dish, like omlet or scrambled eggs, you could consider subbing in tofu. Check out www.NutritionMD.org for good tofu scramble recipes.

Flaxseed can also replace eggs. Dont have an exact ratio so you will have to google it.

Regarding the flaxseed egg replacement: 1Tablespoon of ground flax seed plus 3 tablespoons of water whisked until jelled equals 1 egg! Check out chooseveg.com for more substitutions and awesome recipes.Their 3 bean chili is the best!
