How long did it take to see a difference....
Posted Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM

I was wondering, how long does it take to see a difference on the scale and your clothes.
I feel so gassy and bloated all the time.
I know that I'm eating better but need to start feeling lighter soon.

Thanks,

Devasha

Hi Devasha, the feelings you're having most likely are due to the fact that your digestive track is unaccustomed to the introduction into your diet of certain grains and legumes.

Speaking only for myself, it took a while for my GI track to settle down. I originally went vegan in March, and had many issues with that problem. This time around, though, I'm not having the same reactions. My gut is calm, I'm not uncomfortable, and I feel much better.

The other change I've made, that I didn't do well enough up until now, is that as of a few days ago, I've added much more quantity of veggies to my eating plan. Filling up on them has automatically resulted in my eating less of the grains that were causing my problems in March through most of the summer.

So, it takes time for your body to become adjusted, and a little "detective" work on your part to pay attention to what food item/items are the worst offenders. When you find out which ones are, consider substituting other acceptable foods for them to give your GI track a break.

When you do add the offenders back in, do it very slowly. Your body will eventually come around. Very Happy

Congratulations on your determination to making this work for you! Just be patient and you'll turn the corner soon! Razz

I think all the fiber in the oatmeal, cereal,
brown rice and veg. is doing it to me.
I will keep on going Smile

you might want to vary the grains and legumes a bit more. Use the smaller beans like black eyed peas and use lentils. And make sure that you've got a variety of fruits and veggies. Play around a bit with the suggestions in the menu - do a little DIY even if it's not specified, to figure out what works best for you.

Definitely keep going. I'm fortunate that we made beans and grains staples in our diet slowly over the course of the last 5 years so this isn't sinking me. In fact, I've dropped about 3 to 4 pounds over the last two weeks.

Thanks Very Happy

That is one of my goals for this 3 weeks - I was stuck at a plateau and I needed something to get past that. This looks to be working.

I will say that I'm not following it day by day specifically. I might take Wednesday's dinner and have that on Tuesday and have Friday's dinner on Wednesday and then use the same arrangement of ingredients for something on Friday but not the same recipe and swap out which days I have oatmeal and which days I have cold cereal and such like that.

It's still the same types of foods, still vegan, but I'm adding/adjusting things that we already like (like hubby's vegan chili) and pulling in ingredients and recipes from the kickstart menus (the carrot and red pepper soup is a major hit at our house and will stay in the dinner rotation all winter! We even heated up the leftovers with some brown rice for a more hearty meal)

I had another thought on this as well. Try slowing down your eating. For most folks, they're used to knife and fork eating - slice the chicken, take a bite, eat some veggies, slice of chicken, take a bite, and so on. That takes time. When you switch to where you're eating beans and rice and steamed veggies, it's more just forkful, forkful, forkful... Since it takes about 20 minutes to register that you're full enough, eating faster (due to less logistical work) might happen. Thus you'd be having more rice or oatmeal or lentils that you might really be needing to have but the signal isn't getting through fast enough to say Hold up, that's plenty. FWIW I usually try to stop after two consecutive mouthfuls to have a sip of water and then continue. That gives me a short pause to register whether I'm done or not.
