What's the one thing you WISH you liked? :-)
Posted Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 3:21 PM

I WISH I liked mushrooms! Honestly, a vegan that doesn't like mushrooms could starve to death! Teehee - just kiddin' but it seems that so many dishes, especially ones that friends make knowing you are a vegan contain mushrooms. And dang, I know they're really good for me but they are fungus - no that's not the reason I don't like them but it's fun to say "there's a fungus among us!"

My 15 year old daughter HATES onions which are the base of so many dishes. I happen to LOVE them so I consider myself lucky. My husband - honestly that man eats anything! Smile

So what food do you wish YOU like?

Let me guess, Susan - slimy? Smile I have a friend who is very into "texture" and so she hates eggplant for this reason!

yeah, the eggplant thing. That would make eating outside our home so much easier - grilled eggplant, eggplant parmesan (minus the parmesan Very Happy) and so on. Lots of great looking recipes that I just can't manage to eat.

I also wish I could eat tofu (that's not a preference, that's a physical reaction) because that seems to be the easiest way to get creamy dips and toppings and puddings and such.

Eggplant too! I've tried many ways and just can't get in to it. My best friend loves it fixed just about any way. Go figure.

oh i am hopeing the eggplant i am planning to buy on sat is not slimy.
the farmers market had the eggplant that is a light color and almost round. they said it has a mild taste. we were planning on putting it on the grill.

Fun topic! I love it, we all can use humor and to laugh at ourselves or as the saying goes something like "if we can laugh at ourselves we will never cease to be amused!"

Dare I answer??? Greens. (don't throw anything at me!) I have only had them a few ways and the overwhelm me. Cooked spinach is not okay unless it is in that yummy spinach dip that has nearly no redeeming value. I can tolerate kale in soup. I hear it is wonderful made as chips, haven't been brave enough to try that yet.

So I have a food box delivered by a farmer's association every week. This week? A huge bundle of turnips and chard. Now what do I do???

have you tried spinach in lasagna or calzones? Okay so it would need to use a substitute for the ricotta (whatever works for you) but that's a wonderful way to add spinach into stuff (and it's similar enough to the spinach dip as far as taste and texture that it might work for you).

My problem with greens (unless it frozen spinach leaves) is that it tends to go yucky before we finish it all off (there's only 3 of us and one bunch of spinach is way more than we can eat at one time)

I am good with spinach in things like that, but as I am always watching my weight and work 2 jobs, I don't tend to make things like that too often. Though I used to have a really good vegan manicotti recipe. Quit making it as I can't find gluten-free manicotti noodles.

I need to learn to eat them they way I see here, sauted over something. Just the thought... well isn't pleasant. I keep telling myself if I had them made from someone who know how.... so about a month ago I went to a nice restaurant with my sis and her partner. They were boasting about their new and improved 5th menu. I looked at a tofu/lentil loaf with chard and mashed potatoes..comfort food all the way. So I thought, well since they told me this has been a favorite held over all 5 times! I ordered it and enjoyed every crumb of everything but the chard. It just tasted so much like green dirt. I don't like beets either because they taste like dirt. You don't really want to know why I know what dirt tastes like....

I like EVERYTHING. I wish there were some things I didn't like. I had to acquire a taste for kale, but now I put it in soups, salads, smoothies.

My mother started me out young eating veggies. I was the only kid I knew that liked brussel sprouts, spinach, asparagus, eggplant, brocolli . . . . . . and even liver back then. Know any 8 year olds that ask for liver and spinach? I did.

I have never cared for dairy products. Couldn't drink milk, could easily resist cheese. Have taken all kinds of ribbing because I don't care for ice cream. As a vegan, that's a blessing, not a curse.

Mushrooms, eggplants and olives! Do you know how many restaurants in Texas have no vegetarian (let alone vegan) offerings that don't involve those ingredients? Answer: Most of them! I'm also allergic to artichokes Sad

At least I have aquired a taste for kale, collard greens and turnip greens, so I guess my taste buds are finally growing up some. Very Happy

love texas.. do you have a peiwei close? Go!! they have brown rice... and noodle bowls.. they make everything fresh.. so they could leave out the egg..

Pad Thai
Thai sweet and sour sauce, tofu, bean sprouts, scallions, egg, crushed peanuts, lime, cilantro, rice noodles

Japanese Teriyaki
Sweet soy glaze, onions, Napa cabbage, carrots, spinach, scallions, toasted sesame seeds, white or brown steamed rice

Plus.. you can order any of their signature dishes with tofu. and a little known fact .. you can ask that they don't fry in oil.. they will use only water. I think they call it stock velveted...
Small price and great food and did i say BROWN RICE!! it is almost impossible to find a resturant with brown rice up in NY! THere is absolutely NO chinese resturant in my area that serves it.

Hey Tina,
Pei Wei and PF Changs will occasionally make things vegan (I've eaten there many times, both omni and veg), but everything they serve is a major calorie bomb. The only thing that isn't is Chang's "Buddha's Delight," if you get the steamed version.

Unfortunately, most Pad Thai contains fish sauce. Sad

However, there are several other choices. Have you checked HappyCow for restaurants near you?

Oh! I forgot to answer the question!

I like everything. Seriously. I'm a (not joking) food addict, so I can't think of anything I don't like.

Love eggplant, love (roasted) okra, love greens, love every other slimy, mushy, dirty, weird or otherwise unpalatable vegetable you could possibly throw at me. But I used to hate all of them! Thank goodness for veganism for expanding my palate and my worldview!

Okay, maybe roasted red peppers aren't my favorite. Talk about slimy. Laughing

Oh my dear Elizabeth - there's a reason my friends call me "GuacaMolly"!! I ADORE avocado!! Hated it growing up because it was green but now - chips, salsa and guac! It helps that I live in San Diego where avocados are plentiful!

Oh my poor friend! That's stinky that you can't find the food that you'd like!

I'm not a fan of olives either! And when you have well-meaning friends who order you a pizza with mushrooms and olives?? Sigh...and NOW there's the no cheese thingee.... Smile

Way cool with the greens though!! I need to explore them more (though I do like swiss chard.) Thanks for sharing!
