Bloating and Gas
Posted Monday, March 1, 2010 at 7:04 PM

Hi, I am so motivated to do this diet..but I must say a week ago.I ate vegan for one day and had kale soup, beans among other healthy things and I ended up being sick..very sick...I know it was due to gas which caused painful bloating. I desperately want to do this plan and I keep buying vegan food and trying but I am gaining weight..or gas weight? and am so uncomfortable. I don't overeat soy...I just eat veggies and I get protein from tiny amounts of soy, nuts, flax etc. What am I doing wrong? Help! I've been like this all week!

You've made a big shift in fiber content in your diet, which is presenting a new challenge to your digestive system. You may need to slow things down a little while your system gets used to the switch.

You can do this by chewing carefully, utilize some soups and cooked veggies to ease digestion, and even some digestive aids such as Beano can really help things during transitiong - easy to pick up at many markets.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your help! I was taking a natural gas away formula and gas x but I'll pick up some beano tomorrow. I'm suspecting candida too and my constipation issues don't help! I am determined to get my body adjusted though. I am going to try and cut back on amounts and grains and fruit..see if that helps! thanks again!

Hang in there! My first week or so of the January Kickstart was rough in the same way you are describing -- but it got much better!! Mid-way through the second week I was feeling much more comfortable. You can do it!

Hi Willow,

My Wife and I want to say keep up the good work...! And to remind you of what you already know, being sick is just the bodys way of cleaning out toxins. Also, remember to slow down, its not a race, its a WAY-OF-LIFE.

Hi!

I am new here! I have had the same problem for months!!!! Mostly when I eat any kind of beans. I have tried everything Beano, gas-x and so on but, nothing helps.

I had a test done yesterday for the third time for Celiac and it came back negative again.

So frustrating!!!! Always gassy and bloated!!

Hey everyone,

When I first started eating a vegan diet, actually even before I had problems like bloating and gas and I really committed to working on it. I actually worked with a fellow health counselor on this issue because it was causing an issue for me in my daily activities.

What I found for myself was that I was not allowing myself to go to the bathroom --- I needed to go more often and I would just be holding it or not paying attention to needing to go and when I allowed myself to go more often I had much less gas, seriously!

I also thought I might have been allergic to soy and wheat, and turns out I do have a slight allergy to them. But, I am not sure if it's all soy and all wheat, it seems to be some soy products. So, I eliminated the soy and wheat for a period of time and then slowly brought them back in and it felt a lot better.

So, the combination of allowing myself the time to go to the bathroom more and eating really whole foods helped a lot.

One other important thing - beans are so high in fiber and a little goes a long way. 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup is a lot of fiber especially if you are pairing it with something like veggies, or another grain, because you are way high in fiber. So, just consider that a little goes a long way and until you can sort out the bloating and gas, go lighter on the beans/lentils.

Try doing a food and mood journal, write down what you eat and how you feel physically as well as your mood. It may help find the culprits.

All the best in this journey! I have been there!

MY GF has this problem, but I don't. I am sticking to vegan, natural and wholefood - she is mixing with processed and some non-vegan stuff.
Perhaps you need to go for more simple and less processed food?

I don't know... I have the same problem and the closest thing to processed I am eating is beans from a can.

Carolat, rinse the beans as well as you can before you use them. The water will kind of bubble/foam a little bit in the strainer. That's gas! I find this helps a lot. Smile

It also gets rid of some of the excess salt... You can just add water or broth to any recipe that calls for the "bean juice."

Essie has a good point. The same is true when using dried beans - after you soak and drain them, boil them for a bit, and then drain and rinse them again really well. The hard to digest complex sugars come out in that foam (weird huh?)

I am also having the gas/bloating problem. I actually started doing a vegetarian diet on Feb. 1. I wasn't eating as many beans and legumes as I am now, and I didn't seem to have the problem. Today, I went to a Line Dancing Class. I had to keep going to the Ladies Room! I have been using Beano before eating the beans, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Maybe I should try staying away from the beans for a few days and see what happens. We are going away to a friends house for the weekend. I know it's gonna be so hard. My girlfriend's husband loves to cook and eat. I don't want to hurt their feelings. Wish me luck.

That's what I do, too! Great trick. I also usually pressure cook beans after this, which really cooks them well and finishes the job!
