Hey Molly!

Thanks for the additional links - I also have the 'chocolate and cheese' video on my blog and will look into adding the others as well - and had thought to create new links for each of these hot topics as we go through the month - thanks for furthering the process! Very Happy

Hope all is well with you and so happy to connect with you on another Kickstart!

"Dairy" is one of those categories of foods that flits in and out of my diet from time to time. Always in very small amounts, and I am not convinced that a little yogurt or a little butter, or a little cheese is going to really harm me. Yes, I know such eating violates the ethical principles of veganism, and that's a conflict with which I struggle.

I'll watch the video when I have more time. John McDougall is one of my favorites, I'd almost say "heroes." Maybe that will remove my six ounces of fat-free yogurt every day and wipe the cheese off my pizza.

During the first kickstart I did in September 2010, I kept on eating one non-fat Greek yogurt per day, either as a mid morning snack or an evening snack (one or the other). Then, after the kickstart was over, one week I had to do some grocery budget cutting. I figured I'd cut the yogurts that week (since they weren't on special that time, often they're 5/$5 or something). The next shopping trip, I did the same - just skipped them in order to pick up some other item(s) and stay within budget. Well, after a few weeks of not buying them, I realized that I also wasn't missing them - I'd filled the spaces with fruit, hummus, etc. I never told myself I was "removing" the yogurt from my diet, I was just "temporarily" juggling the budget. I still, every once in a while, think about it because it was a convenient portable snack, but then I just go find some other convenient portable snack (like hummus and crackers) and it's all good.

Chec, you may well be right... a "little bit" won't kill you. However, it does make for a slippery slope and will make it more difficult for you to limit these items in your diet as it keeps the taste for them alive. Also, there are certain health issues that will persist with regular consumption. And 6 oz a day is actually a lot, frequently! I just mention it as you give it as an example.

The final nail in the dairy coffin came for me with what you address yourself: ethical principles. Video from inside the diary comes to mind every time I see a chunk of cheese or glass of milk. I can find and post the link for the specific video of which I speak if you like!

Thanks Bugs for the great, practical suggestions!

Lani, I am a Buddhist (of sorts), so compassion for sentient beings is not new to me. I can go entirely vegan and probably will. May have to have a little burial ceremony for the pizza, and erect a monument. Thinking of an appropriate inscription... perhaps "Here lies the best and worst friend a hungry diabetic can have."
