That's all you can do is keep trying different brands and different kinds. Not all non-dairy milks are created equal. I personally do not any vanilla flavored non-dairy milk. I'm a huge fan of Rice Dream (original flavor) for cereal and such. My family really likes Almond Breeze. I think because it is a little thicker and does not really have an aftertaste like soy milk. Happy exploring!

Getting dairy out of your diet for three weeks may be more doable than thinking about forever. You may be surprised how good it feels.

Susan is right on with this comment - it's all a matter of changing your tastes and that can be done sooner than you think. Give these 3 weeks a go and you'll see! Dairy is HUGE in keeping excess weight on our bodies as well as a host of other problems. And the effects of giving it up are cummulative. Plus watch these leave with dairy: congestion, ear-ringing, a certain puffiness under the skin, head colds, throat goo....need I go on? Check out my post Perils of Dairy, too! Lani

Let me give you an example how easy it is to change your tastes.. Did you ever drink whole milk? Then you were told that was not good for you.. so you drank 2%.. then maybe 1% .. then maybe down to skim... then if you were drinking skim & try the whole.. you couldn't believe the difference in taste. Personally i hate skim milk. it is like white water. I wanted whole. So i was very happy to change to Silk Soy milk.. unsweetened organic (green carton) for cereal in the am.. I used to drink that for dinner too. Honey would have chocolate Almond milk. He liked it as well as chocolate milk from the dairy. Then i bought almond milk for a recipe... and wow now i have that with dinner. Then for dinner a treat, Blue Diamond Vanilla Almond Milk.. truely it's like a vanilla milkshake.. I would be very surprised if you didn't like that. I still use the unsweetened soy in most cooking.

Personally, I don't like any of the flavored plant milks - way too sweet for me. When I first went off dairy, I had to just buy the unsweetened almond milk (Almond Breeze makes one now and it's really good). I used just the unsweetened one for awhile and then tried the original/regular almond milk and found my tastes had changed and that I like it now. I still don't like flavored milks, though. Also, try light soy milk instead of regular soy milk - to me, it's a little closer in texture/flavor to cow's milk, so it was easier for me to drink that than the regular soy milk. Good luck! The good thing is, there are lots of different types of plant milks out there, so if you don't like one, try another one. You're sure to like at least one of them.

I've tried soy milk before, both plain and vanilla-flavored and they're both okay. I've yet to try almond milk, rice milk, and hemp milk. I assume that almond milk has a nutty quality to it? What about rice and hemp? I guess I won't know what they taste like until I try 'em!

I love almond milk and I prefer Silk unsweetened. I once read to try different brands because they will taste different. That is when I switched to Silk from Almond Breeze.

you guys are lucky to have such a variety of different milks. I live in a smallish town (Port Elizabeth) in South Africa, and finding Vegan alternatives is sometimes such a headache and tough on the wallet. The only milk options I can find is soy milk and coconut milk, which is much more expensive than regular cow's milk. I have found a soy milk product which is only about R1 (not sure on conversion) more expensive than regular milk. But all those R1's can add up at the end of the month But I'm trying to stick to soy milk coz I don't like coconut milk. I found a Vegetarian shop just up the road from my new place, but unfortunately, they only stock coconut milk too. So I have very little choice when it comes this. Don't even let me get started on Tofu and Tempeh It's just discouraging sometimes

@ adranne- when you say the soy milk was OK.. does that mean it could be like going from whole to 1% where you would get used to it? You know you might not have to pick just ONE. cch

One thing we found was when we switched from cow's milk (1%, occasionally 2%) to plant milk, was that we didn't drink as much of it anyhow. We rarely drink "milk" with meals - though occasionally hubby and son will pour a glass to dunk cookies into. Mostly it's used for baking and for cold cereal (cold cereals are a comfort food for me). We drink water, we prepare foods with milk. We tried rice, soy, and almond back when we were switching. Preferred the almond - I use plain unsweetened on my cereal and in most baking; hubby and son prefer the sweeter vanilla for their cereal and we sometimes add that to sweet baked goods and then decrease the other sweetener in the recipe by a little bit. We just tried hemp milk this weekend and found it quite distasteful. So, out that goes and we'll stick to the almond milk (which is also cheaper than the hemp) - rice milk tasted too ricey (didn't mix well with Cheerios LOL) and soy milk does nasty things to me hormonally - a few days of soy milk on my cereal in the morning and I was having out-of-synch PMS like symptoms. --Deb R

Another althernative to soy milk is oat milk. There is a brand called 'pacific' that makes organic oat milk. Although I use Almond milk on a regular basis, I have tasted oat milk and it does taste good in chai, cereal, smoothies etc.

How do you use "milk"? I just use in soups, gravies, on cereal or to cook oatmeal or in the occasional smoothie. I never just drink rice milk plain. also it has been a long time since anything dairy crossed my palate, give your taste buds a chance to adjust.

Here's another way to look at the 'milk' thing. There are several cultures and populations on the planet who have never become accustomed to the 'milk' thing, which shows just how much of it is an acquired and learned taste or habit. For example, I'm just back from 3 weeks in the South Pacific where Asian cooking was the standard and dairy in the repertoire of the cooks there is far and removed! That was nice as oppposed to American cooking where it seems butter, milk, cream, or cheese is added to everything! As you move more into the plant-based eating lifestyle, other alternatives take a stronger hold and the milk thing becomes just a splash on this or that, such as hot cereal or cold, on occasion. We need to keep in mind that all of the milk substitutes, such as soy milk, rice milk, or almond -are lightly processed foods. Better, of course, to eat the entire food. However, if using a little soy, nut, or rice milk to splash on your cereal is enjoyable and helps make this new diet and lifestyle possible, then by all means use a little! See it as a seasoning to the whole-plant foods you are trying to consume on a daily basis rather than substituting the nutrients you are used to in milk. Lani

why are you drinking milk?? is it because its just a beverage you enjoy and havent found an alternative comparable in taste? is it because you are trying to get the vitamins/nutrients/health benefits we are told come with it?? if it's the latter take awhile and read some of the articles on this website and just search the internet. dairy is not as good for you as we are led to believe by advertising campaigns. one of the most shocking things to me is it really does nothing to help prevent osteoporosis. if you drink it because you like the taste, then dont think of it as giving it up forever. just do it for the 3 weeks and see how you feel. ive been a vegetarian for 15 years and my taste buds have changed dramatically over those years. ive been a vegan for 3 months and im startled at how much my taste buds changed in just that little time. i never thought i could give up dairy prodcuts and now when i look at them i think to myself "ewww why did i ever eat that??" i have literally no desire to eat cheese. if at the end of 3 weeks you still feel you cant live without milk then drink milk. you have to do what is best for you personally. no you wouldnt technically be a vegan but who's checking??

Just a quick comment, but Dr. McDougall and Jill and Susan from Kickstart have all reminded me that drinking "milk" of any kind is a calorie source. So for those of us that are drinking it for pleasure (as in a glass of milk with a meal) fresh water or tea would be a good alternative to save on calories. That said, a bit added to coffee/tea, over cereal is fine. It does get to why you are drinking it and if you have a weight problem. For me, since I fall into a tad bit pudgy range, a glass of Almond Breeze is often the "treat" but not a standard. Just another add on to the regulars here, I am lurking but as you know I am time pressed, so if I can help anyone drop me a line.
