Low Carb and Vegan?????
Posted Monday, January 11, 2010 at 3:06 PM

Hello all,
is it possible to follow a vegan diet and limit your carb intake? I mean I seem to be indulging in A LOT of pasta, bread, and crackers!...Maybe it's because I'm still nursing my 1 year old! However what do you all do to feel up instead of eating too much carbs?
Thanks

Hey vegmom,

It's a matter of quality and calorie density.

If we are sure to eat to satisfaction on whole, quality foods that are considered "carbs", such as rice, beans (lots of protein), grains, and starches such as yams, squash, and their friends, you "crowd out" the easy edibles like crackers that can be SO easy to overat! And with flour instead of whole grains, you can easily overshoot your calorie needs to stay trim.

I know for me it makes a difference. More bowls of grains and starches than bread, and sprouted at that! Beans are also a primo food for getting your skinny on without having to go "lo carb".

No doubt your appetite is up due to nursing. Satisfy it with whole, quality foods and you'll see a difference!

Dr. Fuhrman's program is very vegan friendly and certainly low carb....so I lean more toward a McDougall's program myself.

Thank you so much for all of the advice!...I'll be sure NOT to pick up the crackers next time I go to Trader Joe's!!!! LOL...Also maybe I can start planning most of meals around beans since those seem to make me feel full!!!!!

What's the difference between the two?

Fuhrman is more about produce and limits starches like grains.
McDougall is all about the starches and limits your intake of beans.
Other than that, they both subscribe to the very low fat. 20 to 30 grams per day.

You might want to think about borrowing some recipes from raw veganism like onion "bread" and flaxseed crackers.

http://marisashealthykitchen.com/2009/09/17/raw-onion-bread/

This one has parm cheese but you can eliminate ut and find many more variations on the recipe.

the onion bread recipe is outrageously good.

Low-carb diets are not healthy for you or your baby. See http://drmcdougall.com/med_hot_highprotein.html and http://pcrm.org/health/veginfo/nutritionfaq.html#Carbs

There is a myth that pasta, bread, potatoes, and rice are fattening, but nothing could be further from the truth. Carbohydrate-rich foods are perfect for permanent weight control because they contain less than half the calories of fat, which means that replacing fatty foods with complex carbohydrates automatically cuts calories.

It’s important to remember to eat healthy carbohydrates, such as whole grains, pasta, brown rice, and sweet potatoes. Processed carbohydrates, such as white bread and white rice, are not as healthy a choice because they have lost much of their fiber and other nutrients.

[...]

The Atkins diet and other low-carb fad diets, which are high in fat and protein and severely restrict carbohydrates, are not healthy approaches to losing weight. High-fat, high-protein diets are associated with many health risks, ranging from mild (constipation, headache, and bad breath) to significant (impaired kidney function, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer).

The American Heart Association, the American Dietetic Association, and the American Kidney Fund have all published statements warning about the various dangers associated with low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets.

McDougall's new program for maximum weight loss is as low-carb as the Dr. Fuhrman program, so it would seem that McDougall has moved on his position recently.

I would be really surprised if the percentage of carbs on MWL is anything like "low carb". In fact, the third chapter in the Maximum Weight Loss book is "Carbohydrates: The Secret to Satisfaction".

Yeah but there is no flour or pasta and restricted grains. I mean, plants ARE carbs first and foremost. But it is very low carb for a vegan diet. Veggies over grain, no flour. Your starch is going to be squash.

I look at these things as a percentage of calories. It's only possible to think MWL is "low carb" because it's low in ALL calories (which is, in my opinion, a bad move, but hey, everyone gets to do what they choose with their bodies, and I mean that sincerely).

I know that low carb diets are not healthy...I was asking about lowering my carb intake...I seem to be eating way too much carbs now that I cut out cheese so I wanted tips or advice as to what I could do/eat that would help me to feel full without having to eat so many carbs so I'm not so hungry!...but thank you for the reminder!...I do only eat the good carbs, no white anything (I was following the Eating Clean diet before I became Vegetarian and now vegan) So I already knew that the white stuff and processed stuff was no good for me!

See http://drmcdougall.com/med_hot_highprotein.html and http://pcrm.org/health/veginfo/nutritionfaq.html#Carbs

What makes you think that? What percentage of your calories come from carbs in a day? If it's less than about 85%, I doubt you're eating too many carbs.

I just seem to be eating a lot pasta and bread!..More than I use to eat at least! I trying to tone up and eating all the bread and pasta is not going to help me reach my goals!....I'll just have to be a little bit more creative when I cook!...more veggies less pasta...that will do it!!!!

Once again, I'll quote Dr. Barnard, and then I'll shut up about it:
