Cutting the Cheese
Posted Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 10:06 AM
OK- I'm talking about giving up cheese. This is the hardest thing for me to do. I've been vegetarian for years, I've given up all dairy products except for cheese. I realize I am addicted. I also have a hard time giving up red wine. I am sure these are the 2 major obstacles that are keeping my weight steady. It's a matter of self-control, and I struggle with it.

I am thankful I never had a cheese addiction. Even before becoming vegetarian I was never really fond of dairy foods. But I can relate to the red wine! It's a very difficult habit to give up. It's relaxing, I look forward to that after dinner glass of wine! I've given it up for lent and I am TOTALLY struggling with it. 40 days is a long, long time!

Oh, I know all too well about cheese. When starting this, I cut up all the cheese I had and put it in the freezer. And I didnt even eat any while chopping. I make vegan cheese sauce to hanker my craving for it. So good on taters. I like beer. That is one of my downfalls with not losing my fat.

I was at the market to stock up on food and they had Daiya cheese that they were selling in the deli section - It is awesome! I had the Cheddar flavor in bean burritos last night. It is so worth the $$ to have some now and then when melted cheese is called for. Give it a try! It's hard to find. Google it and there's a list of stores that have it.

Just remember cheese is fat, cholesterol and oil. There is no fiber and contains puss from the cows milk. Still want cheese?

It's a matter of self-control, and I struggle with it. Cheese, not surprising! On Dr. Barnard's video here: Dietary Magic or Mayhem: cheese, chocolate, meat.... he describes a study of 2 groups of women who changed their diet for weight loss. The vegan group, he said, when asked after the study what they missed most, he was sure they were going to say ice cream and chocolate. But it was cheese! Having an understanding of the biochemistry of eating cheese (casomorphines) and learning more about the dairy industry itself can bolster your resolve to make this change. I know! Lani

I dont care about ice cream or so much chocolate, but yes, its true about the cheese. Ive often said I can live without meat, but cheese, gotta have my cheese. I need to view that video.

I didn't think I could live without cheese either, but two months into this new life -- I can't imagine eating it again. I remember how bad (not guilty, just blah) it would make me feel after, versus how incredible and full of energy I feel now. I know the Kickstart advocates for little/no nuts but this recipe really helped me transition, is ridiculously easy to make and was comforting to me the way cheese used to be. Good luck! http://veganyumyum.com/2008/08/super-quick-tomato-basil-cream-pasta/

Thanks Joalie, that recipe looks amazing - I saved it and plan to make it after the 21 days are over.

A friend gave me this recipe... Boil in 1 quart of water for 20 - 30 minutes: 2 large red potatoes 2 med. onions 2 carrots 1 clove of garlic put into a blender then add: 1 tsp salt 1 tbs. agave nectar 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup yeast flakes 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning Blend well. Good as a sauce or dip. This recipe makes a lot so the 1/4 cup of oil isn't quite as bad as it looks. It is amazing how creamy this combination is.

The original recipe called for honey. I probably didn't put anything in its place! Its only a tablespoon. Jean

I am going to keep repeating sandra41's description of cheese. Thanks for that one! I too have been a vegetarian for years and did vegan for maybe one. Cheese and sour cream are the only animal products I consume and I can't get them out of the house or the rest of my family would have a revolt. We will continue to struggle on that one together!

Does anyone know if goat cheese is any better than cow's milk cheese? I'm not saying I want to eat it now, but just wondering.... I do miss the feta cheese on my salads. I think goat's milk is easier to digest than cow's milk, and I'm guessing the goats aren't treated as bad as the dairy cows either, and may not get as many hormones and other drugs, but I don't know for sure.

I like feta cheese too. I always thought it was a healthier choice over cow's milk cheeses. You can make feta cheese out of tofu. Ive never done it, maybe I should look into it.

Dr. Barnard's chapter on cheese is EYE OPENING, and available online here: http://books.google.com/books?id=VixE_PWeqbYC&lpg=PP1&dq=barnard%20breaking%20the%20food%20seduction&pg=PA49#v=onepage&q=cheese%20opiates&f=false Highly recommend the whole book, by the way!

I've never been a big dairy foods person even before I went vegetarian or vegan, but after reading "The China Study" you can bet it will never touch my lips again. I've even switched omnivore husband to vegan cheese.
