here is where i get confused...

I found a "bag of chips" i know they are vegan. (unless no yeast?)
They are called Snackios.. baked pita chips, trans fat free. Ingred are Stone Ground Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt. High Monounsaturated Canola oil/and or sunflower oil, Kosher salt.
1oz is 110 cal w/20 from fat 6 servings per bag
4g fat =6% of daily
130 mg sodium
carbs.. 12g with 6 g dietary fiber 0 sugar & 3 g protein.

so they look good for me right?? but my brain says they are chips.. no good stay clear...
BuT if they fit w/vegan plan i would be able to eat as much as i want??? or is it only the foods listed i can eat as much as i want??
or should i use these w/hummuas?
Should i ration these out if i like them? like divide them into bags for a daily allowance? and either eat them plain or w/something.
I am not a big bread fan.. i get my grains mixed with all the beans... either brown rice or quiewa so far... or whole wheat couscous. .. but i do like chips.. is this a healthy alternative??
i did eat a bunch last night.. after the cukecumber that didn't fill me up... i needed more beans at dinner so i don't snack... maybe these could be an afternoon snack? Confused

btw for chips.. they are good.. light & crisp

also.. i used to eat triscuit thin crisps..
made w/whole wheat, soybean and/or palm oil, salt.
Those used to be a go to for snack or dinner with cheese and an apple.

15 crackers (that is a lot.. i didn't even eat that much) is 130 cal w/45 from fat.

total fat is 5g w/1g saturated (darn palm oil)
sodium 180mg
potassium 21 g
carbs 21 g w/dietary fiber 3g
protein 3 g

i guess i won't be having these anytime soon due to the tiny bit of saturated fat. Hopeing (i like it better the e on the end) that the chips are even a better choice.. sounds stupid to say... chips better.. Rolling Eyes

I would eat them sparingly if at all. There is such a thing as vegan "junk" food. Not saying those are "junk" but truly, the less processed foods you eat the better. Better for your health and your waist line. The conversation about eating all you want is about whole foods, veggies, fruits, whole unprocessed grains, beans. I've never heard of anyone gaining weight because they ate too much brocolli or too many apples. Too many chips?? Maybe so.

With processed foods, we say a general good rule of thumb is less than 3 grams of fat per serving. I can't tell if these have 4 grams per serving or 2.2 grams per serving (looks like you said a serving has 110 calories with 20 calories from fat = 2.2 g).

If the latter is true, 2.2 grams per serving, then not a bad chip choice. But if there are 6 servings in a bag, that's a pretty small serving. Be careful.

Does anyone teach the "fat formula" any more? It was something about dividing the number of calories per serving by the number of fat grams etc. to determine the percentage of fat. I forget exactly how it went.

Part of the confusion might be i did not consider these chips to be processed food. Also since the difination of processed is so broad it is hard to apply that to if i should eat it or not..
Since i really didn't know.. i looked up the defination.. "Processed foods have been altered from their natural state for safety reasons and for convenience. The methods used for processing foods include canning, freezing, refrigeration, dehydration and aseptic processing"

Again.. not a good determination for me if i should eat it. I freeze, refrigerate and sometimes eat canned food.

Anyhow.. what i looked at was if i knew what all the ingredients were..Also shelf life; if it lasts forever, it's probably not good for me. Then i see how it was made.."processed" When they say baked.. it thows me.. cause in my mind... i see me baking..
IN my mind it's not processed or processed bad. they just did the work for me...
So i looked at my kashi. low in fat.. cheerios. same..

i guess that means all the amy products and frozen vegie burgers are processed.

Can i then say that any processed food should have less than 3g fat per serving? and not worry about any of the ones i make like brn rice, couscous, quiwha, beans, etc?

I think i am gettin it. Thanks..

I like what the Dr. Praegger's boxes say "Where you recognize all the ingredients." That's where I draw the line with what I consider "processed" and what's not. Canned tomatoes ... if there is no sugar or unpronounceable chemicals, they go into my shopping cart. Ditto frozen veggies. Ideally, we'd all eat nothing but fresh foods or foods we have "processed" ourselves. In the real world, most of us can't do that. It's my goal, but won't be reached until I am no longer working a full work week outside of home.

I actually found that if I bake a few corn tortillas (the thin kind, like Mission brand has) in the toaster oven and break them into pieces (or alternatively, cut them into triangles and bake them), they are as tasty as regular chips but without the oil. They go great with salsa and bean dip Smile.

Hey CCH,
In your first post you mentioned "after the cucumber that didn't fill me up."

Is a cucumber all you had for dinner? No wonder you weren't full!!! You need protein and LOTS of fresh vegetables! Smile

NOT chips. Those things look like junk food to me. I would not eat them. Especially not "a lot" of them. No way! Razz

hi molly,
the cuke was not dinner.. it was a snack after work.
I did have beans/rice for dinner.. i think it was lentil soup. I just didn't eat enough of the good stuff..
then went for something light after work (7:30-8:00pm) .. thought i would do healthy and grabbed a cuke.. just didn't do it... then i got in trouble..

i ate lots of beans/rice today for dinner. 2-black beans southwest burgers... lettuce, tomato.. salsa.. and even some hoppin john salad. i was hungry..

i am doing better tonight. no snack.. going to bed soon.

Sounds like you're doing better. Smile That's good. Don't be afraid of the veggies, though! Have a big salad with lots of lettuce, some chopped bell peppers, radish, cukes, carrots, etc. That will really help to fill you up – all the fiber is very satisfying AND helps to peel off the pounds. Wink

I'm glad to hear you're doing better. But those cucumbers are not enough! Haha! Very Happy

so today the plan is cereal & bannana.. or maybe i will mix it up and eat oatmeal w/cinnamon & bannana.

lunch is difficult today... they are throwing me a birthday party.. i am taking veggie kabobs, hoping john salad, and quiona.

the trouble runs in where dessert comes.. they made my all time hands down favorite cake.. we had it for our wedding.. carrot cake.. i want some.... bad... i used to joke that is how i get my veggies.. carrot cake! with cream cheese frosting of course..
is there a vegan version of that??? (for after the 21 day kickstart or after i get to my goal weight?)

dinnner .... sometime today i guess i have to think about meals for the rest of the week.. and soups..

i have been avoiding big salads.. in the summer i eat salads everyday...while i love them.. i kinda get burnt out on them too. boring.. i think it's time for lunch soups.. it is starting to get cooler..

thanks for listening..

cch, there is a vegan version for almost everything! Especially baked goods like carrot cake, banana bread, etc with "cream cheese" frosting. Start establishing some good sources for recipes, there are tons online, including established sites from various vegan cookbook authors, veg. and vegan sites like Vegsource, Dr. McDougall,of course all PCRM has to offer, as well as tons of vegan blogs, many very good. Just keep in mind not all vegan recipes are "healthy".

i seem to be able to maintain a weight real well .. i have been the same weight for 10 years.. i was thinking once i get to my goal weight i could sprurge JUST A LITTLE.. and maintain.. like i do now.

I have been vegan since June, 2008. I tried many recipes from different sites for baked goods. I found what works best for me is to take my old tried & true recipes & veganize them. Sometimes it takes a few tries. For eggs I use unsweetened applesauce or ground flaxseed mixed with water & up the baking powder about a teaspoon. For the oil I cut it down to 2 or 3 tablespoons for the whole recipe & use applesauce to replace the rest of the oil. I have found most people can't tell it's vegan. They usually just comment how moist & delicious it is. Don't be afraid to experiment until you get a taste & texture you like. Again these kind of foods are best in moderation.

what would you substitute for cream cheese frosting?
maybe i would put something different on the cake or just eat it without any frosting.. yep i think that might work.. if cake is good;it doesn't need frosting.

I know that Sarah Kramer's cookbook's come highly recommended for making vegan versions of omni dishes:
http://www.amazon.com/Sarah-Kramer/e/B001V206AU/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1

And the website VegWeb has thousands of recipes:
http://vegweb.com/

I don't know about the cream cheese... maybe a cashew cream that had been thickened with something like agar...? Just throwing that out there.

Ah, I just found this on VegWeb (though it looks to be a caloriebomb!!!):

Faux Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 8 oz package of vegan cream cheese
1/3 cup vegan soy margarine (like Earth Balance), softened.
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups vegan confectioners sugar

With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and margarine. Add vanilla, then add sugar.

They also had many recipes for carrot cake.
