Weird taste in my mouth
Posted Monday, January 11, 2010 at 5:38 PM
The terrible taste started in my mouth yesterday, and intensified today...is this normal? I was a very clean eater before, I have only had to eliminate chicken breast and salmon from my diet. I didn't eat any preservatives, dairy, white, refined sugar or processed food....just surprised to have this God awful taste...HELP!

Sounds like a detox symptom. Does it taste metallic? Was your meat hormone free? Antibiotic free? At any rate, if it is not something medically related ( sometimes i get a bad taste in my mouth that is sinus related) I would put my money on detox

Goobygirl- Yes it is a metal taste...BLAH! I figured it was part of the detox. I only ate meat 2-3 rimes weekly, it just shows how just a little bit puts toxins in your body. Plus my vegetable intake had quadrupled, , so I think I'm just cleaning the old system out....YAY!

It is probably detox. I was vegetarian for 7 years and switching to raw vegan gave me the metallic taste! Think about it, the salmon at least prolly had mercury in it. Drink water with lemon will alkalanize your body more and help. I do green smoothies and add lemon juice and even grapefruit seed extract to help with the acid levels. The grapefruit extract can be used for a lot of things, from health to cleaning your house, but i like to take it internally to act like a mild "bug" and yeast killer too.

I sometimes get that metallic taste too...and not when I'm in any kind of "detox" mode. I have read that it can be a symptom of diabetes (not to scare you!) which I do have now. Also, it seems I get that taste when I drink more than my usual 2 cups of coffee.... (when I raised the issue with my doctor she shrugged and changed the subject. I should mention she is now my former doctor) Maybe Susan can shed some light??

I'd say mention it to your doctor. Here's a page on it from Dr. Weil: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA350574/Metallic-Taste-in-Your-Mouth.html

A year ago, I was on a colon cleanse and had a bad metallic taste in my mouth. Researched the internet and then saw 3 Bay area dentists including one specialist. I was told I had a low grade tooth infection under an old filling and that could be causing it, or a metallic taste could be a bacteria in the mouth or a reaction to garlic, which seemed unlikely since I've always enjoyed garlic in foods. So.... I took my health in my own hands and made some changes. We installed a reverse osmosis water filter to improve our water quality protect us from the copper pipes in the house. Not inexpensive, we spent $300 + installation. The water is delicious and the taste disappeared shortly after. I also had the infected tooth pulled and replaced my old mercury fillings. Unfortunately, the metallic taste has returned since I began this vegan diet. That said, I'm inclined to think I'm de-toxing and will drink more water to see if that helps.

Thanks for all the great advice. I will try the lemon, it can't hurt. As for Dr. Weil....I love that guy!

Thanks for all the great advise. As for my mouth/gum disease I just went to the dentist last week and I have perfect gums (thanks to flossing and good oral hygiene) I also don't have any fillings in my mouth. I just had a physical about a month ago and my blood work was great too. So, with ruling out the obvious...I will assume I am detoxifying from all the crap in the meat I was eating. Thanks again!

I've had the same taste in my mouth too - I guess I was attributing it to other things (soup being too hot on my tongue or something earlier) until I saw this thread. I too have not switched from red meat and only occasional chicken or fish (like 2-3 times a month), plus dairy and processed cereals. I know it isn't my dental hygiene - it correlates with starting this diet.
