tofu liquid

On a vegan recipe demo on youtube, the guy said to not throw out the tofu liquid and to drink it reuse it somehow (in a soup or a marinade I suppose) ... that it's healthy. Is this true?

haa haa don't ask me! the first time i used tofu i used the liquid.. i guess almost everyone does it the first time... it's like the first time someone learns to waterski.. they don't let go of the rope when they fall. my honey has nice arm muscles .. he held on so long underwater we had time to stop the boat. i was still laughing when we got back to pick him up... in fact i am laughing now..

Somehow the vision of your honey with the water ski episode makes me laugh also! As far as the tofu liquid, I have never given it much thought and I have been eating for 20 years! haha You can always be enlightened in a new way, you never stop learning. That said? I have no idea! Sorry!

Ewww. That doesn't sound very appetizing to me. I don't like to waste stuff, but you'd have to really sell me on NOT pouring the tofu juice down the drain.

I suppose it's probably similar to whey - whey can be used in all sorts of baked goods for a richer result. But since I don't "do" tofu, it's a pretty moot point for me --Deb

I had duplicated the post by mistake and it was deleted. I think Susan answered there saying that if the tofu liquid has calcium (and magnesium too I think) in it (it says on the package), it's perfectly healthy.

When you buy tofu, it is packaged in water. I suspect that what your web demonstrator was talking about was the liquid left over after you make your own tofu. I have never heard of anyone recommending using the former; I have frequently heard of people using the later. Personally, I have never attempted to make my own tofu so I have no experience with the liquid remaining after the tofu has been extracted from the soy milk.
