Juicing vs. Cooking

Take for instance kale or spinach. I have a Jack La Lanne juicer which I love. I guess I'm not getting the fiber. Is that where a Vitamix would be better?

I hate to say it but, technically, a Vitammix or just a regular blender would be better.

Is there a blender out there that works as well as a vitamix? Those things are definately awesome. So far my regular blenders need a little coaxing to turn out something even similar.
THe price tag is up there.. but i don't need to cook in it.. so is there a good alternative? maybe a cuisinart?

Sorry to say, I have had several blenders and killed them all. I got a Vita-Mix and would never consider anything else. You can purchase refurbished ones from the company that is a lower cost that may be worth looking into.

I used to make a breakfast drink (an apple, an orange and a bannana, sometimes w/protein powder) with one i had... it blended the stuff so well it would actually separate if i didn't drink it fast enough.

I saw on their website it can do so much more.. put a bunch of veggies in it.. turn it on for 4 min.. hot soup.. then add a little bit more veggies, turn it on low.. and chucks in your soup.. sounds good.

then i like the carrot soup from here.. that would be a lot easier..
i am considering a vita mix... anyone else have one?

and what is your favorite concotion?

Well I don't have the Vitamix (by the way I think Costco has a good price on it sometimes) ... I have the Jack LaLanne juicer. But I love anything with ginger!

Ginger, there is another one I can't quite get around. Gingerbread and cookies are yummy for flavor but ginger in anything else I don't care for.

I also have a Jack LaLane juicer that I LOVE! I would be lost without my Vita-Mix though. Smoothies on the weekends and a great tomato soup! But since the soup is made with cashew cream, sadly, it isn't low fat.

But that soup with fresh tortillas... yum!

I use a Breville and I have never had an issue with it. I know that the Vitamix is supposed to be the gold standard but I love my Breville.

In the morning I have a smoothie with fruit, spinach, ice, beans, flax and some water.

In the evening, I have a smoothie with lettuce, spinach, oranges, flax seed, beans and some water.

I also have the Jack LaLane juicer and I use it sparingly because I do not get the nutrition from the whole fruit that I use in the blender.

I have a Blendtec blender that I got from Amazon. I absolutely love it. My husband did some research on them and found (from reviews) that it was easier to clean than the vitamix. It may be quieter also, but I never heard a vitamix. I have gone through so many oster mixers I lost count. I think this will last a long time. It is the kind that many coffee and juice places use.

Wen, and anyone else out there, please share your green smoothie recipes that you love. I have several recipes, but have been too chicken to try them and waste good ingredients if I don't like it. It would be nice to try one that has been approved. btw I love kale, but I always eat it cooked, usually just sauteed in water, Braggs aminos, and onion powder.

Thanks for the info on the other 2 blenders! Nice to know what else is available!

I decided to look up the other 2 blenders, Christmas is coming. The Blendtec is near the same price as a Vita-Mix but it has this recipe

Carrot Juice
2 cups water
2 cups carrots, peeled and chopped
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp fresh ginger root
¾ cup ice

Now I must admit I LOVE carrot juice and this has the whole carrot...nice!

Plumberry Granita

2 cups apple juice
¾ cup plums
2 cups raspberries, frozen
1 cup ice

Add apple juice and plums to WildSide pitcher and secure lid. Press “Smoothies”. Add the remaining ingredients and secure lid. Press the “Whole Juice” button. Pour into 9? x 13? pan and freeze for 30 minutes. Using a large spoon or fork, scrape frozen crystals from edges of pan into liquid.

Repeat this process every 30 minutes or until mixture is frozen about 2-3 hours. Using a fork, scrape and break up granita into shaving pieces and serve in chilled dessert dishes.

Okay

This is just silly, but I saw a U Tube video on the Blendtec and iPhone. Some odd looking fellow puts an iPhone in the blender and blends to dust, smoke and a strip of metal. Several questions come to mind....

In the interest of people saying they are considering different models, I found this link that I thought was interesting:

America's Test Kitchen reviewed all of the "normal" (read: not Vitamix or Blendtec) blenders, and the Kitchenaid 5-Speed won out. I just bought one for myself. Haven't used it yet, but I'll let you guys know what happens when I do.

Yes please do let us know. That's quite a difference in price from the Vitamix or Blendtec.

When I make my juices with the Jack LaLanne I always feel like it's such a waste when I throw out all that beautiful pulp. Would compost if if I could. Time to consider a blender type.

There are recipes somewhere on how to use the pulp in baking. Though I have never tried it, I have heard it makes backed goods amazing!

My worms (vermiculture bin) get my pulp these days.
