Type 1 Diabetes

My fiancee's 20 yr old son has TYpe 1 diabetes. He is very fastidious about taking care of himself. I know he eats a ton of vegetables. He eats fish (salmon) and maybe some chicken. My fiancee is vegan (for me, and, he also knows it's the right and healthy thing to do) but would never try to tell his son to go vegan (and I would certainly never dare). He's happy enough that his son is doing so well.

In contrast, his 29 yr old daughter (who is not diabetic at this point) and her husband are both overweight and have rejected my fiancee's efforts to sway them to veganism.

Not that I would ever interfere with what his son does, but I'm curious what is the PCRM's position on Type 1 diabetics eating some animal protein ... fish?

A little review for readers: with type 1 diabetes you do not make any insulin, with type 2, you make insulin it just can't do its job properly. So, for those with type 1, insulin will always need to be injected.

However, people with diabetes are at increased risk for heart disease. In fact, two out of three people with diabetes will die of heart disease or stroke. So anyone with diabetes would do well to adopt a low-fat, plant based diet.

that is a big reason that I am doing this kickstart. We moved from SAD to "mostly vegetarian" to vegetarian because of hubby's family medical history (obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension) that was making itself known in him. Little did I know then that I was going to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years later and it would be even more important to watch how we eat.

I wouldn't try swaying anyone...just ply them with TONS of good foods when they're visiting. Don't say "This is vegan" but just "this is an awesome recipe we found and thought you'd like it". If they inquire, give them the recipe. There will come a day when they will (sadly) find out that they need to make changes. When that comes, you want to have the communication channels open between you so that they feel they can come to you and not get an "I told you so".

But there is this universally widespread notion, that fish, and fish oil supplements are good for people especially where heart health is concerned. The whole conventional medical establishment espouses this. How do we counter this? Can I say to my fiancee or his son that fish is not healthy and he should go totally vegan?

I myself am not sure what the truth is. I know PCRM is not in favor of seafood consumption.

There's the rub: certain types of fats/fatty acids are good (at least that's what they say today, tomorrow is anyone's guess), fish has those, therefore fish = good. Right? That's the way the conventional logic runs.

I wouldn't say "that is not healthy" - negatives tend to beget negatives/defensiveness. Instead, I'd set myself the task of finding ways to incorporate the healthy aspect (proper balance of fatty acids) in plant based ways.

There are several plant-based sources of Omega-3 acids. VeganHealth.org has a good resource page on them.

Walnuts, flaxseed and vegan Omega-3 supplements are good sources.

You could try offering these foods and supplements as an option, highlighting the risks of mercury toxcicity and waterway pollution runoff, and the tragic plight of our ocean life due to overfishing.
