The Food Network is just the saddest thing going
Posted Friday, September 17, 2010 at 3:03 PM

I used to turn it on to learn new things about cooking. Then along came Paula Deen and some others with all of their high-fat stuff. Ellie Krieger and the other "healthy" cooks got relegated to oddball hours and may not be on at all any more for all I know. All that seems to be on there now are stupid competitions, and I don't even switch that channel on any longer. Has me wondering if there will ever be a mainstream vegetarian or vegan cooking show. I somehow doubt it.

look for the Cooking Channel - it's new, sister to FoodNetwork, but has a bunch of different shows including some shows that frequently (though not exclusively) do vegan and vegetarian menus. I think also Planet Green has some shows that are vegan or vegetarian cooking.

As with anything else, the mainstream is what you'll see in media.

FWIW we still love Food Network - not for their recipes but we've "met" some interesting new items there (like celery root) and interesting ways to use old favorites. Again, as with anything, we pick and choose the pieces of it that fit.

Ellie Krieger is on The Cooking Channel now. I still watch some shows on Food Network, but only to get some ideas that I can make vegan, even if they aren't already vegan. Or, sometimes I scan ahead on the guide on my cable box and DVR any shows that feature all vegetarian foods, which usually are easy to make vegan, too. Smile

I stopped watch Paula Deen years ago - around the time that she made that nasty doughnut-bacon cheeseburger-fried egg thing. Shocked If you don't know what I'm talking about - Google it. It's absolutely revolting looking.

We do the same with watching and 'tweaking' the recipes.

We have a running joke currently on that KFC commercial - double meat, double cheese, double bacon...double bypass!

Pretty amazing that as recently as about 6 years ago, hubby would've thought that looked great.

When I had TV, I found a series by Christina Pirello, "Christina Cooks". If you aren't familiar with her here is a link:

http://www.christinacooks.com/

She has an amazing story! Cooks vegan.

Also you can look at Jessica Porters "The Hip Chicks Guide to Macrobiotics or her link:

http://www.hipchicksmacrobiotics.com/

Also vegan. They both tend to cook Macrobiotic and for a beginner, the PCRM will be much easier and more familiar.

Best wishes

Paula Deen's Bread Pudding made with Krispy Kreme donuts should be on a warning list someplace. Maybe even against the law !!!

There just aren't enough cooking shows that focus on health. I think we should petition Oprah to have some vegan / vegetarian cooking shows on her new network.

Ooh. That's a good idea about petitioning Oprah. I'm really hoping her new channel ends up on my cable package. I don't want to pay for an upgrade, but as it is I don't get Fit, Green or Cooking Channel (probably on same package as Fit & Green). Maybe when the economy picks up...

I agree with the Paula Dean haters...I've only ever watched that at my parents' house. My mom and sister both have her books, but watching her cook grosses me out. Razz

On Food, Ten Dollar Dinners usually features vegetarian/vegan sides and occasional entrees (plus actual cooking tips), and I'm hoping Aarti's new show will also be veg-friendly since she's Indian.

Isn't Tal Ronnen Oprah's chef? He should have his own show.

So true. Maybe that will happen.

Sadly, Comcast doesn't offer any of those channels on the tier I have. To get those channels added would cost me way too much money. <sigh>

go to the Cooking Channel website - recipes, information, and I think even video clips are all there for free

even the food channel's website has some good stuff - there's a "seedy crisp" recipe that is really simple, relatively low fat (it does add 3 tbl of olive oil per batch), and delicious. It calls for sesame and poppy seeds and we add in flax seeds as well, in addition to using freshly ground whole wheat flour. I haven't looked too far but there are some really good recipes there that are or could easily be modified to be vegan.

Saturday I was fortunate enough to attend the NW VegFest and saw Tal Ronnen in person. He demoed a celery root soup and a quinoa salad. There was enough for us all to tast the soup, yummyWink but not enough for the salad Sad .

He should have his own tv show. He's really easy on the eyes! Embarassed

I may faint, a man who can cook, is vegan AND easy on the eyes?? Okay sarcasm probably isn't appropriate. Sorry, kind of...

Ooh we like celery root - usually we make it like potato (hash browns, oven fries, soup ingredient). I might just have to go track down this recipe.

Hey Mariberry

Just seen your question. Unfortunately I sold my TV some years ago to pay for my Booja Booja "Maple Pecan" Ice Cream habit. So no, I haven't seen CDWM.

For a while my brother kept me updated on all the good stuff showing on TV, but he got a bit sick of doing that and plus I sold him too eventually.

Theodore
I can see you are "simplying" your life, I try to also but it never occurred to me to sell off family. Did he get a good sum? Smile

Okay so I've just realised that "brother" means something completely different in America.

In England it refers to what you guys would call "senator".

Our male siblings are called "bloody-brothers". Note the subtle difference. The word "bloody" signifying in this case that the person is a blood relation.

Hope this clarifies matters and thanks for flagging the issue Oceandog.

I think a US Senator would be more akin to an elected MP. Unlikely for a senator to be keeping folks updated on TV programs and they shouldn't be getting bought or sold.
