TVP (texturized vegetable protein)
Posted Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 5:55 PM

I just made TVP sloppy joes. AND THEY WERE SOOO GOOD! I think I could eat the whole pan. All I did was saute onions, green pepper, red pepper, garlic, shredded carrots until soft in about 1/3 cup water. Then I added 1 cup tvp and 1 cup water. Enter Manwich. Yes, manwich. One whole can. And it came out sooo good. I seriously recomend this. I think the kids would even devour it!

That being said... does anyone else have any tvp recipes they would recommend? This experiment went so well.. I am looking forward to another one. Smile

HA! We make exactly the same thing - haven't done carrot, we did corn!
We use TVP in Chili, too... we just use a homemade chili kit - not the packets... they are chemically - and add onions, beans, peppers & white shoepeg corn. Throw in a vegan cornbread or grilled cheese and Yumm-O!!

That's a good idea! I love corn! And I think it would have made it a little sweeter. And next time, I would like to make homemade sloppy Joes. I have a recipe for it, and hear its sooo good. I know I shouldn't have used manwich, but I was in such a lazy mood last night. Thank for the idea! I am thinking vegan burritos too! mmmm.

And to think I was so afraid to try these little dried up kernels. LOL. They are a god send. Smile

Here's a similar recipe that I just love, it's coming out in Dr. Barnard's new cookbook in June:

Everyone needs a good Sloppy Joe recipe. This recipe will have you catching every bite before it falls on your plate or the floor.

Tempeh Sloppy Joes
Serves 4

1 package, Tempeh
1 small onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 8oz. can tomato sauce
2 tbsp Ketchup
1 tbsp agave nectar
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp vegan Worcestershire
2 tsp mustard
½ tsp garlic powder
1 cup water
Salt and pepper to taste

Heat ½ cup water in skillet. When water is hot, add the onions and peppers, sauté until cooked through. Add the other ½ cup water and the Tempeh to onion and pepper sauté and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the tempeh to get well done. When adding the tempeh, crumble into small pieces.

Add in the tomato sauce, ketchup, agave nectar, apple cider vinegar, vegan Worcestershire, mustard and garlic powder and cook for 15 minutes.

Serve on multi grain buns.

I didn’t know that:
You can substitute faux meat crumbles, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) or even lentils in this recipe.

Dumbo here. What is Tempeh (?) and tvp? Is it used in the 21 day kickstart?

TVP is a dry soy meat substitute. The initials are for Texturized Vegetable Protein. It comes in beef and chicken flavor, ground or chunks. It seems to hold up better than the frozen crumbles when used in stews or chili.

Tempeh is usually in the same refrigerated case with tofu. It is soybeans compressed into a thin cake and, I think, fermented. It has a nutty texture and flavor, but like tofu it can be flavored in recipes.
