what is soy creamer?
Posted Friday, September 17, 2010 at 4:07 PM

I see it's used to make home-made vegan icecream. Not that I have a machine to make it, but if I bought one, what brand of soy creamer do I look for? Do I buy it in a health food store?

I'd have to see the recipe but there is such thing as soy cream, not creamer. Do you think that's what they mean?

I googled soy creamer and yes there's stuff that's called that. My computer is slow or I would put a link.

There is soy creamer. It is generally used as a dairy replacement in coffee. However, there is also soy cream which is much richer and used for cream sauces and possibly ice cream making.

Oh, my friend who make home-made vegan ice cream referred to it as 'creamer'. Thanks for clarifying the distinction Susan.

They have a soy creamer at Trader Joes that is good. I like it better than Silk creamer because it is not as sweet. Although, if creamer is what you use in ice cream, I suppose the fact that it is sweet won't make a difference.

Silk makes a soy creamer for coffee, etc, that comes in flavors like vanilla, hazelnut, and plain. Depending on which flavor you get alters the sweetness. I used the plain which was not sweet. There is also a very similar product out now, only based with coconut milk in the same flavors (not coconut-flavored). Again, I use the plain, as I do not care for sweetened coffee. There are also recipes out there that call for these, usually the plain, where a little more body is needed over just a plain non-dairy milk.
